Making Home Safe for Baby
A few months back when Ryan and I started taking stock of our belongings with regards to babyproofing our house, we had to laugh. Our place is basically a baby death trap — sharp corners, glass tables, pointy metal tchotchkes, cords and electronics and just basically a baby’s worst nightmare. We’ve got it all. But we really wanted to find a way to babyproof that would let us hang on to a bit of our aesthetic and still make things safe. I know our kiddo won’t be mobile for a while, but we’re getting a jump on it. We’ve got this adorable niece and nephew who visit lots, and I kid you not — one of the very first times our 1-year-old nephew came over, he fell on the fireplace hearth and scratched up his face. That was it. The babyproofing game was on.
We started by just trying to replace the things that we could. Remember our hunt for the perfect coffee table? We put our old glass top vintage trunk in storage and found this perfect padded bench. It’s got storage and it’s soft but the top is still firm enough to hold up a glass on a coaster. Boom! We stocked it with a few toys and blankies and it’s the first thing my nephew goes for when he visits.
We also grabbed this edge and corner cushion kit from Munchkin and wrapped up the fireplace corners, so at least there aren’t any sharp edges. I popped a couple of pillows and a soft rug on the hearth as well, just in case (which will render the fireplace useless, but I suppose babies and fire don’t mix anyway…) and I think it’s a good solution for now.
The next step was trying to get rid of any of our beautiful but terrifying decor pieces that lived down low. We replaced some spaces on our bookcase with soft baskets we can fill with toys, and put out some kiddo books and other tchotchkes for the little ones. All of the outlets within reach got these cute little outlet covers (I think they look like candies, so I love them!), and a couple of corners got these cushions just in case.
One of my nephew’s favorite drawers to open is one with piles and piles of cords and electronics, so he’s helping us learn where we need to use these safety latches, too. (Munchkin’s supply of childproofing gear has been a perfect place to start for this first time mom!) They’ll be going on all of those magical cabinets and drawers with sharp or toxic or otherwise scary stuff. I guess we really should be thanking that little dude for lessons in babyproofing!
Every time we make something a little safer, I feel a bit better. It’s kind of like removing one extra little thing to worry about while we’re getting ready to tackle this new adventure.
