Recently I was interviewed by Glamour on happiness. You can see my quote here. Below is the full Q&A. After reading it again, I think I may need to take my own advice on a couple of these. ;)
1. There are some people who dwell on certain events than others. Why is that? What can we do to change that? Is there anything we can do to change that?
When it comes to happiness, genetics plays 50%. 10% is circumstance. That means 40% is attributed to our reactions to those circumstances. If you can understand that you may not be in control of certain situations, you can be in control of how you react to them. Trying to stay positive is not always easy, but it requires a conscious choice. And if you are really in a lull, get back to the basics of what makes you you, by doing simple things that you enjoy.

2. What motivates you to get out of bed on a bad day?
For me a Starbucks Venti 2 pump skinny vanilla latte usually helps. Fortunately for me, I am able to be in a professional field that I love. If you don't love what you're doing, I know because I've been there, it makes it difficult.

3. Is there something specifically that you tell yourself/think about/automatically do when something doesn’t go as planned?
When something doesn't go as planned, I try my very best to embrace it. Sure, it's challenging. But we have to believe there is a plan for us beyond our control. Somewhere along the way, we will understand, look back, and know that it will all be worth it. Our struggles and challenges make us better people. I always think, God is much better at planning my life, than I am.

4. How do you stay happy?
I truly believe that happiness comes with self acceptance. When we drag our egos or insecurities around, our output is negative energy. But if we are able to say, "This is me, this is where I am, and I accept it," then we're getting somewhere. We smile more, and let our guard down which allows us to be more open to others, and vice versa. I try to stay centered in life, and do things that fulfill me, which means taking care of myself and maintaining relationships. There should be balance between your passions and your priorities. Photography and blogging are huge passions of mine.

5. What is something simple you do daily to get into the swing of practicing happiness?
I pray for positivity and a light heart. It's not always easy, but I try my best to always face people with a smile no matter what is thrown my way. Getting rid of the television and picking up books has also been enlightening. I read books that mentally stimulate me and help me search for answers. Currently, I am reading, Dying For Perfection, You Are Your Choices, Man's Search For Meaning, and I listen to So Long Insecurity to and from work.

6. What would you recommend a pessimist first do if she wants to turn her life around?
Try to see the bigger picture in life. Sometimes we are so micro-focused on an area in our life, that we either need to zoom out, or change the channel. When I say change the channel, maybe it's focusing on someone else and how we can better their life. Or maybe, it's changing your situation. If you're not happy, decide what it is that needs to change. It is perfectly ok to say to yourself, "This isn't how I want my story to end."
