And that my friends was March. It’s hard to fathom that tomorrow is April considering that ~ despite my crowing last week ~ this week still features forecasted temperatures hitting the big 3-0.

The countdown is on autumn!

April is a big month ~ Easter, school holidays, Anzac Day ~ lots happening and of course we kick off it with the most foolish day of the year.

This image is from a sunrise off far north Queensland when we were up that way late last year. I love those dramatic clouds and peeks of light. I’ve uploaded it to society6 here, too.

• April starts on the same day of the week as July in all years, and January in leap years. April ends on the same day of the week as December every year.
• The Romans gave this month the Latin name Aprilis. The traditional etymology is from the verb aperire, “to open,” in allusion to its being the season when trees and flowers begin to “open”.
• But because April was sacred to the goddess Venus, her Veneralia being held on the first day, it has been suggested that Aprilis was originally her month Aphrilis, from her equivalent Greek goddess name Aphrodite.
• In 450BC it had 29 days. The 30th day was added by Caesar during his reform of the calendar.
• In the US, poetry gets in the spotlight as does jazz appreciation.
• April 2 is World Autism Awareness Day and April 22 is Earth Day while the third Saturday is Record Store Day.
• April’s birthstone is the diamond and flower the daisy or sweet pea.
