DIY Toaster Oven Shelf

I’ve been SLOWLY working on clearing the clutter in my kitchen. Since this is a room we’re in a lot it seems to be a never ending job. Most of my cabinets and drawers are organized. It’s the clutter on the horizontal surfaces I can’t seen to get under control.

One thing that bugs me is all the large appliances. After I organized my pantry I was able to move several of them onto a shelf in there. My stand mixer, deep fryer, toaster and Food Saver vacuum sealer are now stored in there. Click on the picture to be take to the details for that post.

That just left my toaster oven

Using some inspiration from my moms kitchen (she just had it remodeled and they included an open cabinet below her wall cabinets to hold her toaster oven) I decided to build a simple shelf to hang under the cabinets.

Super easy. Just a few scrap 1x3s I had laying around and another scrap board for the shelf. I don’t have pictures and a full tutorial but I basically just screwed the 1x3s into the edges of the cabinet underneath and used metal angle brackets to attach the shelf to the 1x3s. The hardest part was cutting the shelf. The only place I could hang it underneath was in the corner that meant I couldn’t just use a square board for the shelf. I had to cut the corners off. I just taped together several pieces of paper and trimmed until I had the angles right and then transferred that to the board. Let me know if you need to see more detailed pictures of any steps.

It was all cut using a circular saw and after a couple coats of white paint it was ready to be installed. That part was a little tougher and required 2 pairs of hands. I love the result. I didn’t really gain a lot of usable counter space but for some reason it looks better.
Now I have space on the sides to store the tray we only use occasionally and underneath the oven is were I store my small glass cutting board that I use frequently. The best part i s we can no longer store stuff (dishes, cutting boards, etc) on top and add to the clutter.

By the way, did you notice the tile? You're getting a sneak preview of my new backsplash. In one of the photos above if you look real close you can see my new paint color. Yep, the turquoise had to leave. It just didn't match the tile we ended up going with. I was very sad at first but now that I settled on a new color I LOVE it! I do still have the turquoise in my laundry room and I can see that from my kitchen so it's all good! :) Hoping to finish up a few more projects and then I'll do a full reveal.
