The Week That Was: 25 August 2013 Edition

My last Sunday in the city of possibilities, and I’ve a lot to report. Here’s a look back on the week that was, the last one to be written as a Louisvillian.

The first decision is that of my name. I am now legally Cameron Miquelon (MEE-KEHL-OHN). I did this to bring my legal identity in line with (then) assumed professional identity, the one I adopted when I brought my blog back to my personal Twitter account after foolishly giving the avenue its own for a month. Since then, I’ve worked under this name for the likes of The Truth About Cars, Louisville Public Media, and my current work with Insider Louisville and Louisville.com. Let’s just say things will much easier when it comes to being paid (not that it ever was difficult to start, but still).

The second decision — barring an intervention in the next few days by the one person who offered a spot out west (or if I’m magically hired by Gawker as an editorial fellow) — is the location of my new home:

I’m moving to Seattle.

There are a few reasons for choosing the Emerald City over my first choice, New York. One was the unemployment rate: 5.9 percent to the Big Apple’s 8.2 percent, according to the current unemployment stats from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics; Louisville comes in at 8.5 percent, by the way. In short: I might have better luck finding a temp job under the Space Needle than I would under One World Trade Center at this time.

The second reason is the connection being established between Seattle and Louisville through the efforts of New2Lou and New2Seattle. In fact, I was supposed to go to work with the former before life pulled up to take me away. That said, I’m willing to take my skills to the first spin-off of the social organization — founded by two former Seattleites who moved to Louisville just months before I did, coincidentally — designed to help transplants adapt to their new home.

My goal is to establish a second connection between the two cities, beginning by writing articles for Insider Louisville about Seattle and its relationship(s) with the River City. What happens after, happens.

Other reasons I have include being able to go to my first “brony” convention (Everfree Northwest), better mass transit (and not just in Seattle alone), being only three hours away from relatives in Portland, Ore., familiarity with the area (having lived an hour south in Tacoma for 4.5 years prior to moving to Louisville), better environment for LGBT persons, having developed a love for “Frasier” as of late (thank you, Hallmark Channel), and so on.

The only things I need now are a place to land, and money in my pocket for transit fare et al.

Until we meet again, I leave you with “Seattle,” the opening track from Public Image Ltd’s 1987 album “Happy?” The group will play a series of dates in England and Scotland throughout October of this year. All the best to you.
