simple DIY winter wreath

Happy December! This month is going to fly by, but I fully intend to soak up every moment. It’s such a magical time! :)

It’s our first year decorating the bungalow for Christmas and my mind has been spinning with ideas. This wreath for our front door was my first project to decorate for the holidays. I was tempted to buy a $20 wreath at the store, but then I saw a bundle of tree clippings for $3.99…and suddenly I was determined to make my own! It was my first time making a wreath and it was easier than I thought! I kept it simple and I love the results. What do you think? Nick called it my “wild child” and I love how it’s unique with a personality of its own. Plus, since it’s neutral and green, this wreath works well not only for the holidays, but during winter months as well!

Here’s how to make it…

Depending on the materials you have on hand, this has the potential to cost between $5-$10…score! I didn’t have time to go to the craft store to get something for a base…but then Nick had the idea to use a wire hanger! Brilliant. Just use a pliers to reshape the wire into a circle…and remember imperfection is beauty. :)

Next, gather tree clippings and assorted greenery. I used seeded eucalyptus (leftover from this project) and fresh rosemary from the garden.

Next, you’ll need floral wire and floral tape. Begin by cutting your tree clippings and greens into small branches.

Once you have all of your small pieces of tree clippings, take each piece and wrap it tightly with floral wire to the wire hanger base. Then wrap the wire tightly with green floral tape.

Continue to layer the branches of tree clippings all around the wire base, making sure to overlap so that no wire is showing.

Lastly, cut your seeded eucalyptus (or greenery) into small branches. Using hot glue, attach individual pieces close to the base so that the glue is hidden. Hold in place to allow each piece to set. Repeat the same process for rosemary or other desired greens.

Let dry for 60 minutes before hanging. To hang, create a small loop out of extra wire and attach to the base. Hang on a nail indoors or on your front door! It’s a bit fragile, so I think this wreath will work best if it’s a little protected, which is why I put it on our front door with a storm door covering it.

I hope you had a happy Thanksgiving and have a beautiful start to December!
