Boris and the Dumb Skulls Review and Giveaway

Are you ready for Halloween?
I have been reading Boris and the Dumb Skulls, I previously read the 14th book, I still want to read these myself and long to read a bedtime story for children again. Alas I rarely get the chance, but knowing how good the last read was, I agreed to get stuck in to this latest adventure.

This is Frank Hinks’ 16th! children’s book in the Ramion collection. Presented in hardback, with 35 full colour illustrations and entitled ‘Boris and the Dumb Skulls’. It will be published on the 20th October 2014. Perfect timing and content for 7 year olds this Halloween. T

Brief synopsis Griselda the witch has been drinking too much evil spirit. Boris her pet skull and the dim daft dwarves are fed up of being bullied by her. They decide to form a punk rock band and seek fame and fortune. But just before they leave for their first gig two of Griselda’s dead ancestors break out of their glass tanks beneath the ruined tower. Fifi Vicomtesse de Grunch is very keen on dancing. Her husband the Vicomte expresses his feelings towards Fifi’s dancing partners with a spanner. Not surprisingly the boys’ father comes to regret dancing with her. When Griselda arrives at The Polhill Arms to reclaim her property (Boris and the dwarves) things do not work out as she expects (perhaps even Griselda is not totally beyond redemption), but unfortunately the evil spirit is still working inside her: it has not forgotten her ghastly plan of how to fill the larder.

I found this like the other Ramion books I have read to be hilarious, I know they are aimed at children, but there is entertainment for the daft at heart like me.
I am sure Frank Hinks is a similar age to me, the punk band references and the dwarves and Boris singing loud deathly wails (especially their band name) is funny and reminiscent of some of my gig visits in those teen days.

Griselda being loved up is funny to read and her softer side is actually scarier, I am sure she is a bit of an alcoholic with her bottles of evil spirit. The boys (based on Frank Hinks three sons) see their father become embroiled with Fifi and the sub plot to rescue him is also very amusing.
The marriage to poor Boris forced by Griselda will have children fearing for his safety and the hilarious twist in the tale at the end is enthralling.

I loved this book, i think children will adore it! www.ramion-books.com
