6 (Kinda) Life Changing Things I’ve Learned At the Library

I L-O-V-E the library. Maybe I’m partial to it because working at one was my very first job where I stayed for a cool five years — that’s probably it, right? — or maybe I just really like books. But checking out books with the New York Public Library system is such an experience, let’s run through the six things I’ve learned there.

You can live in one borough and use your card anywhere.

I got card from a library near my house in Brooklyn, but the libraries in Manhattan is where it’s at. First off, a lot of the libraries are open during business hours and who has time for that? I use one card (and one card only) and I can use it in any library in the city.

There’s an app for that.

Whoa, the NYPL has an app so you can check the locations, hours, and even renew your books on the go, so you don’t always have fines, like me.

You can even borrow e-books.

I hate to put books on hold at the library, because, most of the time, I want it right then and there. But If that’s not an option, downloading an e-book might be one. And just a hint: Even if it’s a new book and it says you can only check it out for 14 days, you can always switch it to 21 with the drop-down menu.

Guys are creepy, especially in a library setting.

Omg, nothing is weirder than having a guy, “psst” you from the stacks while you’re browsing books. It’s supposed to be quiet! Don’t be that guy, bruh.

They actually have cool exhibits and projects.

Last summer, NYPL plunked a photo booth in their main branch for people to take pictures with their books. It was a fun social media campaign that was sooo corny, yet cute, I had to participate. They put some of the pictures on their site, and it was really adorable to see people of all ages posing with their books like older couples and children (super fun!). Who wouldn’t want to take selfies with book?

They offer TONS of free classes.

I’m not just talking about Intro to Microsoft Word either. NYPL has classes — free! — for creative writing, learning how to meditate, and, of course, plenty of activities for children. So that means if you have a little one, and want to get some work done but keep your kid entertained, go to the library and sign them up for the arts and crafts class.

It’s your small business center.

Starting a small business is the WAVE, so if you have an idea that’s been brewing for some time, might as well get it poppin’ at the library. They have an online directory to tell you where to get counselors, workshops, and loans (if needed), so it’s worth checking out.

What have you learned at the library?
