A Step-By-Step Guide To Telling Your Jesus Freak Friend To Chill Out

We all have that one friend. That one friend who we love and adore but always takes it a step too far when they tell you about their love of Jesus. Now, don’t get us wrong, we love the Lord (insert praise dance), but we just don’t gab about it every second of the day. There’s a time and place for everything, so here’s a step-by-step guide to telling your Jesus freak friend to calm down.

1. Sit her down and talk about whatever is on your mind — food, pop culture, clothes…

… because that’s literally all it takes. But there’s no need to make it a big deal. You don’t want your friend to be on the defensive.

2. Give her one “Jesus slip.”

Everybody needs a pass but only ONE. Make a mental note of that, “Won’t He do it?” comment when all you mentioned was the fact that your favorite episode of Martin was on. Put it in your pocket, because it will be of use later on.

3. When it happens again — because it will — thank them for their thoughts but let them know how you really feel to all of her (or his) religious references.

Just do it tactfully and respectfully. Hopefully, they will understand that you don’t need to bring Jesus and his disciples into every single situation. Sometimes, you just want to be “regular” (whatever that means for you) and laugh and talk and not think about what’s going on in Ephesians. Can. We. Take. A. Break. Please?

4. Some people aren’t that great at receiving the message (see what I did there?), so this is where you need to get real.

Sometimes you need to be a little blunt because that’s the only thing that works. Set some boundaries about what you will and will not talk about. We all have those friends or acquaintances where you can only talk about certain things. Put this chick in one of those piles. It won’t hurt.

5. Fight dirty and use their words against them.

Tell your friend about the guy who bought you drinks last night and say that you’re “blessed and highly favored.” She might get offended, but she’ll get the point.

6. Hug it out.

They’re still your friend, and at the end of the day, you love them. And at least now they know where you stand.
