10 Problems Only Single Girls Understand

Couples love to talk about how relationships take work, but have they ever thought how hard you have it as a single girl? Here are some problems every single girl is sure to encounter (and their solutions).

1. Your grocery bill is too damn high

While most happy couples split their bills 50/50 you’re stuck paying for everything.

Solution: The weekly circular is your friend; don’t be afraid to shop multiple stores for the best deals either! Stock up on non-perishable items while they’re on sale, then purchase meat and produce in small portions as needed.

2. Your food goes to waste before you can eat it

Having to throw away food that has spoiled because there wasn’t enough time in the day to eat the whole pizza pie is possibly worse than spending too much on food.

Solution: Host a potluck! Prepare your favorite main course and invite your girls over for dinner. Ask them to each bring a side dish, dessert or bottle so all your single ladies can enjoy a full meal without taking on all the labor.

3. Getting home safely

Staying out late is fun until its time to figure out how you’re getting home.

Solution: Factor cab fare into your budget. Any decent financial advisor would object but you HAVE to put your safety first. Moving soon? Make sure a parking garage is available or you’re at least in a well-lit neighborhood close to public transit.

4. Needing a handy man

Household items are bound to break, but what are you to do when you’re no Ms. Fix It?

Solution: Always keep a case of beer on hand. Most platonic friends don’t mind doing you a small favor with beer and/or pizza as an incentive!

5. Lonely cold weather days

Nobody likes being alone in the winter, snuggling up with someone special helps fight off the seasonal affective disorder. So what’s a girl to do without a snuggle buddy to occupy her time?

Solution: Get a challenging hobby. Whether it’s Pilates, learning to cook or taking on an intense DIY project, find a hobby that will keep you busy. This way you’ll be so occupied trying to accomplish something new being alone won’t bother you so much.

6. Getting locked out

When you live with others you just have to pray they’re home, or awake, if you forget your keys, but when you live alone the responsibility is all on you!

Solution: Got a trusted friend that lives nearby? Give her a copy of your keys. You’ll always have a safe way to get in the house, as long as you can reach her, and avoid spending $100 on a locksmith!

7. Never getting ‘just because’ gifts

Your coupled up girlfriends love to Instagram random surprises from their significant others but you don’t have anyone sending you chocolates or concert tickets ‘just because’.

Solution: Treat yourself! The next time you place an online order from Sephora and they ask if it’s a gift at choose “YES”! Write a sweet note congratulating yourself on a recent accomplishment or simply reminding yourself how awesome you are! Even without a bae the note will help lift your spirits!

8. Zipping up the back of a dress

There’s nothing like trying to slip into that freak’um dress and realizing you can’t pull it up past your bra strap. Do you change your outfit or just throw on a shawl and pray you don’t expose yourself?

Solution: Put those wire dry cleaning hangers to use. Attach a string, to a wire hanger and use the hook to zip your dress up.

9. Your coupled friends neglect you

You’re single but your friends aren’t and sometimes they’ll exclude you because of your status. While they’re out doing “couple things” you’re home sipping wine and catching up on DVR.

Solution: Take this time to bond with other singles. Try hosting (or attending) a friend-of-a-friend party. Every invitee, including the host, brings one friend like a cousin or business partner who is a great person that they just can’t date. You might meet someone new, thus solving your single issue, and at the very least you’ll have company.

10. Flying solo at weddings

Weddings are cool when we all do the wobble, but slow songs can get so awkward you end up parked at the bar for the night. How do you deal with being an extra wheel?

Solution: No need to feel singled out (no pun intended!). Bring a wing woman to any couples event and be sure to dress to the nines since you never know which other singles will be there!

What are some problems you’ve had as a single girl and how do you solve them?
