We have been exploring winter, cold, and ice this month, so I thought it would be fun for our 2 year olds to paint on ice…

I was inspired by this post by Toddler Approved.

So, I placed the whitened ice trays on our art table and added some blobs of white and blue tempera paint.

The art table sat empty for awhile. Finally, one child came over to check things out, and then more gathered. This is how it is with our 2 year olds. They sort of travel together.

As they moved the paint around on top of the ice, they noticed puddles forming.

They mixed the colors while transferring the paint to their paper.

Slowly the tray turned into watercolors. (And side note, this little one had a hard time saying good-bye to her daddy, so he gave her his reading glasses. She carried them everywhere she went. You can see them beside the tray of paint.)

A bit of science. A bit of fine motor. A bit of creativity. A lot of fun!
