DIY: HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN LIP BALMS TUTORIAL

So I’ve been dabbling with a bit of DIY and making these Home made Lip balms. I’m pretty pleased with the turnout and thought I’d share my tips on how to make lip balms with you.

It’s actually pretty simple and so much fun to do. You can create so many different variations from colour, flavour, scent to texture. The key is play around and amend your recipe until you find the perfect mix for your needs. For example I found my first batch a bit too waxy and decided to add a bit more of almond oil and less beeswax the second time around. The result was a perfectly moisturising lip balm that was easy to apply and left the lips with a subtle and glossy sheen.

The best thing about making your own lip balm is that you are in full control of what you put in it! I love knowing that my lips are being conditioned by purely organic and natural ingredients. It works out so much cheaper in the long run and makes the perfect gift to friends and family!

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

1: ALMOND OIL 150ml, AMAZON || 2: PEPPERMINT ESSENTIAL OIL, eBay || 3: WHITE BEESWAX 50g, Naturally Balmy || 4: SHEA BUTTER 80g, Naturally Balmy || 5: PINK MICA POWDER, Naturally Balmy || 6: LIPBALM TINS 15ml, eBay || 7: RIBBON, Paperchase.

Please note that the above ingredients will make 20 x 15mls tins. If you didn’t want to make such a big batch you can always half the recipe like I did.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN LIP BALM STEP BY STEP:

  1. First melt the beeswax and the almond oil in a glass bowl. You can either place your bowl over a simmering pan of hot water or place the bowl in the microwave for a few minutes until the wax melts.
  2. Next add the Shea Butter to the mix and heat it again for another minute. Make sure not to overheat the solution and let the residual heat melt the shea butter instead. Use a spoon to mix the solution to speed up the process.
  3. Once your mixture is fully liquid form, you can now add any flavouring or colouring to the mix. I chose to add 3 drops of Peppermint Essential oil to get a subtle minty flavour and to also help sooth chapped lips.
  4. Using a table spoon, mix in your mica powder to add some colour to your lip balm if you wish. I I added about two tea spoons to get a subtle pink shade. Make sure to stir the mixture well.
  5. Wait a few minutes to let the mixture to cool down then transfer the mixture into your tins.
  6. Easy part over, the hard part is resisting to put your finger on them to try them out! You must resist for at least a few hours! Leave them to sit in room temperature to set or place them in the fridge overnight.

OPTIONAL TIP:

To pretty up the balms, I decided to glue some colour ribbon around my tins, simply cut a strip to fit around the tin and use PVA glue to secure. The ribbon I used were 1cm wide which I found fitted just perfectly on the base of my tins.

Sourcing ingredients for your recipe is relatively easy, I found most of my ingredients to make lip balms online from a site called Naturally Balmy. Other ingredients like the oils and tins I got from Amazon and eBay.

I hope you like my DIY Tutorial today! Let me know if you do try it out yourself!
