Holiday DIY: How to Make Clothespin Gift Tags
The holidays really are the most wonderful time of the year. From family traditions to festive (and cozy) fashion to some much needed vacation time, there’s really nothing better than this season. And because we’re a little bit Pinterest obsessed around here, this also happens to be our favorite time of year for crafting.
If you’re like us, you know how exciting it is to walk into a craft store and start to dream up endless DIY possibilities. Well, we had one of those moments a few weeks ago when we strolled into our local Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores (our go-to for all of our crafting needs). We knew we wanted to put together a fun, holiday-inspired DIY for all of you, and we were inspired the minute we stepped foot inside. As expected, the list of items we wanted to DIY grew as we walked up and down the aisles, but we knew we had to narrow it down to share a cute holiday craft to share with all of you.
Lately, we’ve been spending a lot of time perfecting our gift-wrapping skills, and we had seen a super cute clothespin gift pin floating around the world of Pinterest. So when we came across a pack of plain clothespins at Jo-Ann, we immediately knew what to do. We decided to make our own version of these cute clothespin gift tags, and give them a Team LC twist. Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores had everything we needed, plus more. We ended up getting all of our supplies there, and also picked up some extra goodies to use throughout the holiday season…because it’s always so hard to leave a craft store with just the things you need.
So, without further ado, here’s how you can make your own holiday-inspired gift tags using supplies from Jo-Ann…
DIY Holiday-Inspired Gift Tags
Supplies:
- clothespins
- festive items to decorate the clothespins with (we used these cute little holiday bows, some jingle bells, a few cute little characters and a mini-ornament… but you can use any decorative items you like!)
- double sided tape
- hot glue gun hot glue sticks
- fine glitter
- baker’s twine & butcher paper (for wrapping your gifts)
- gift tags
Instructions:
Step 1: First, lay out all of your supplies, and make sure your glue gun is heating up. Then, take a plate and pour out your glitter into different sections (we used white, silver and gold glitter for our clothespin gift tags). Cut pieces of your double-sided tape intro strips that will fit the width of the top of each clothespin. The tape will act as the glue for the glitter!
Step 2: Once you’ve attached a strip of double-sided tape to the top of your clothespin, dip that side into the glitter. We made a few clothespins with just gold, a few with just silver, and a few with a mix of silver and white. Make sure to push the clothespin around and press as hard as you need to get the glitter to stick to the entire piece of tape.
Step 3: The top of your clothespin should look like this (above) once you’ve finished dipping it in the glitter.
Step 4: Next, it’s time for your hot glue gun (we used this one). Before you use it, choose which decorative items you want to attach to your clothespins because the glue can dry quickly. For our first clothespin gift tag, we used a cute little snowman. We had also seen some pretty DIY glitter ornaments on Pinterest, so we decided to make one of our own. We got these mini ornaments, opened them up and just poured some glitter inside. So easy!
Step 5: Apply a dollop of hot glue to the tip of the clothespin, on the glittery side. Then place your decorative item right on top of the drop of hot glue, and press down and hold for 10 seconds.
Step 6: Once the item is secured to the clothespin, it’s time to finish off your gifts! We wrapped our gifts with butcher paper and used baker’s twine as ribbon. We also got cute gift tags and wrote out names using a gold pen. Simply clip the decorated clothespin to the baker’s twine, and place your gift tag in there, too.
…and voilà! It’s such a fun and easy DIY, and the options are endless. You can use these instructions, but make your presents your own by getting creative with your wrapping paper, finding unique items to glue to the end of clothespins, and using different colors of glitter.
