The latest in artist-cosmetic collaborations: Japanese Pop artist Keiichi Tanaami has created a slew of new works for Sephora’s “Sweet 15″ anniversary, including illustrations, the larger-than-life sculpture “Kannon of Beauty” (influenced by Buddhist God of mercy Kannon Bosatsu), and an animated video. The sculpture and video are on display at Sephora’s MeatPacking district store through 2014. Even if Sephora’s online customers aren’t quite sure what to make of Tanaami’s social media avatars, I’ve just been to see the video in the store, and it is awesome. More to come on this here at Wild Beauty, but for now, check out Makeup Museum‘s excellent post on the artist and his Sephora project. Makeup Museum.

Did you know there’s a new “it” size? Did you know there were “it” sizes? Maybe not, but you’ve definitely heard plenty about size 0′s and size 2′s, and now there’s a new size we’ll be hearing about: Size 8. Miranda Lambert, Mindy Kaling, and Crystal Renn are already among the celebrities quoted as being Size 8′s – you know, relate-able celebrities. But what, exactly, is this new “Size 8″ thing about? Kjerstin Gruys, who has both worked in the garment industry and done graduate-level research into industry clothing standards, gets into the implications of the new “real women” sizes trend. A Year Without Mirrors.

I’m Beautiful the Way I Am

In Pictures: Ok, so maybe some makeup customers don’t quite identify with surrealist pop illustrations, but we’re all bombarded with images of airbrushed perfection. Especially in New York, which has advertising everywhere. Which is not that big a deal when you’re an adult with media training, but for tween girls, whose identities are fluid (and unstable), it can be way too much. In comes the NYC Girls Project, a series of posters featuring tween girls being beautiful the way they are – smart, funny, adventurous – each girl in the series gets to make her own list. That the girls don’t need to airbrush out their “tweeniness” is the point – teen girls with high self esteem are less likely to abuse drugs or alcohol, bully or be bullied, or engage in risky sexual behavior.
