If you were to tell me the future is looking bright for Australian high street labels — though I can’t fathom how one might incorporate that into general banter — I’d laugh very loudly in your face and probably tweet about it. But if you’d shown me WitcheryMAN’s AW14 collection, I might reconsider.
It’s everything Australian menswear has been in dire need of for years: clean, simple, versatile and very aesthetically pleasing. Indeed, taken out of context it could well be the latest drop at Zara. And perhaps that’s wherein the success lies: taking an international approach to design in order to incentivise sartorial patriotism. After all, I hardly think leather jackets would ever be appropriate in Australia, or Sydney at any rate.
By no means will Witchery suddenly overtake Zara — I don’t see that happening ever, quite frankly — but at the same time I can’t imagine anyone not wanting to wear what might be the greatest leather jacket on the high street, or an über flattering leather accented knit.
Quite frankly, I want it all.
