Hair to the Throne

I’m very much an advocate of trying before I buy. It’s the reason virtual dressing rooms excite me so much, and also why I switched my hairdresser late last year.

Cue entry, Elly Hanson.

I’ve worked with Elly for well over a year, mostly during my stint as a Menswear Editor at a now-defunct online magazine. As a hair stylist, she’s amazing. There are very few people in this world who can translate, “Scandinavian sex god emerging from the hot springs where he was handcrafted by tiny elves imported from Iceland,” into an actual hair look. When you find someone who can, you stick with them.

With the success of our past collaborations in mind, Elly was the first person I went to after parting with my last hairdresser. (The lesson in that story? Never trust a guy with peroxide blonde hair and a fake tan, with your hair.)

I came armed with nothing more than a hastily-created Pinterest board of hairstyles, gave Elly my full trust, and at one point suggested she give me a bowl cut (it turns out Elly is quite fond of bowl cuts). True to form, Elly turned my nonsensical jibber jabber into the best haircut I’d had to date.

But what’s the point of shouting praise at my hairdresser, you ask? Well, it got me a free haircut.* But mostly, I feel compelled to spread the word, because there’s only so many times one can stare at someone’s bad haircut in an attempt to somehow make it better.

Consider this an act of philanthropy. Now hurry and get yourself to 672 Bourke St, Surry Hills. On second thought, you’d better make an appointment.

* How’s that for disclosure?
