“Toni Maticevski possesses a certain quality that many designers lack.”

It would be safe to say that Toni Maticevski possesses a certain quality that many designers lack. That is, the ability to intermingle the skill of a famed European couturier with a clear understanding of the modern woman. While the former alone could maintain the loyalty of his clientele, it’s the latter that is most appealing, and that has ensured the designer’s rapid growth over the last few years.

This season cemented the narrative of the Maticevski brand, which began with last year’s study in drapery, which drew its inspiration from Dior’s New Look. The silhouettes were revisited, yet the affair was arguably more relaxed than before. Even the elaborate path which the models took as they exited gave way to a traditional runway layout, signalling what some might argue was a return to Maticevski’s commercially driven past collections. To me, this read more as a sign that the designer has finally struck the balance between art and wearability.
