If you hadn’t noticed, this little old blog has had some nipping and tucking over the last couple of months. It just so happens that the redesign process has been extended to include content — that is, I’m starting to publish mostly original images where possible.

Which brings me to this: the first original series on this blog, which I’ve simply dubbed ‘Three Looks’. The premise is nothing daring: I simply shoot three outfits on une personne chic. Capiche?

For the first Three Looks post, I couldn’t think of anyone better to feature than the single most awesome person I’ve met via Twitter: Gianni Borrelli.

We meet at Gianni’s Potts Point apartment, where he asks me to pick out the items from his wardrobe I’d like to shoot. (I should point out that everything Gianni is wearing is his own.) Instantly I whip out his cropped Josh Goot bomber, which he wore in the first look we shot, narrowly avoiding the urge to take it and run. Then I notice the assorted printed shirts, which he later tells me were mostly op-shop and vintage store finds. I praise his shopping skills, he takes a shower while I watch Drag Race re-runs on his TV, then we take a taxi to the nearby wharf where we’ll be shooting.

Gianni’s style is the perfect complement to his personality; the myriad printed and coloured pieces he owns are the sartorial manifestation of his attitude to life, which he would kill me for describing as ‘YOLO-esque’ (but it is). Having seen his creeper collection first hand, it still boggles my mind that for the last few months he’s been working in advertising, which is but one of his many talents.

Again, the YOLO mentality seems to be the cause of this — it’s the reason he made the move from Adelaide to Sydney on a whim, why he’s spent the last year jumping between jobs, and most likely how he manages to pull off a neoprene sweatshirt, emblazoned with a giant alien-like face, with the ease of a hipster in Birkenstocks.

Such instability would be enough to make one motion sick at the very least, but for Gianni it’s been highly rewarding — his LinkedIn profile should suffice as evidence — and if anything has become apparent, it’s that Gianni loves a good challenge. That and he’s one talented man, but you really didn’t need to hear that from me, did you?
