5 Mature Takes on Beauty Products from Your Youth

Most little girls get excited about beauty in one form or another long before they can actually wear eyeliner. Once we’re able to wear full makeup, we seem to step away from the products that eased us into the world of beauty and choose more adult versions. But those products always hold a place in our hearts — memories of playing dress up, the joy of trying new scents and the addition of the butterfly clip that pulled your hairstyle together. These items can still have a place in our lives today, just in a different form. I’ve rounded up a few beauty products from our youth that will have you feeling nostalgic and excited to get your hands on the newest, more ladylike takes of each. Enjoy!

Lip Balm – Kissing Koolers were all the rage when we were young. The tubes were like a lipstick, the fruity flavors smelled delicious and the marbled appearance was mesmerizing—It was a simple balm that gave you a hint of color and made you feel like a lady. Today, you can channel a touch of color in a more mature form by picking up Maybelline’s Baby Lips Moisturizing Lip Balm. With flavors that will make your mouth water and your lips shine, Baby Lips is the perfect way to get your balm fix and still be excited over limited edition scents and packaging.

Hair Chalk – In the 90s, L’Oreal released Hair Mascara. A sort of hair chalk that you applied with a mascara wand. If you weren’t using this process and your mom was ok with tinted hair, you probably tried Kool-Aid or Highlighters to give your strands a subtle change. While there are still hair mascaras, the newest way to give your locks a stripe of pink or blue that lasts a week is the new liquid hair chalk by L’Oreal.

Scented Polish - Bonne Bell dominated the 80s and 90s with scented and flavored products. LipSmackers chap sticks were huge, but the scented polishes, that’s what I really missed. The polish didn’t last long though—nearly peeling off in a day or two—and wouldn’t look right in an adult collection of Essie, Debra Lippmann or L’Oreal. The recent release of Revlon’s Parfumerie line is a flashback favorite. With 24 scents, it’s hard not to want to try each rich hue or enjoy the scents every time you wave your hands. Even the bottles are pretty and feminine!

Body Glitter Spray - It touched all of our lives, whether we wanted it to or not. Body glitter came in roll on or spray form and seemed to be an essential in daily life. While I don’t want to be glistening from head to toe in purple glitter, I do like a bit of shimmer and instant glow —illuminating my skin instead of looking like I just got into a crafting accident. ^_^ Michael Kors Bath and Body Liquid Shimmer Dry Oil Spray can be applied all over your body, leaving you with a subtle and soft silky sheen.

Hair Clips – Along with banana clips was the rise of the expandable ponytail holder. It could cover your bun or be formed at the base of your ponytail in a cone shape to pull hair away from your neck. The plastic construction was easy to break and took away from the overall “chic” factor. The updated version–the Circle Hair Cuff. In either gold or silver, wrapping the cone around the base of your ponytail instantly gives your locks a powerful and polished look. Plus, paired with an all black outfit, the accented metal delivers an instantly fierce transformation.

What beauty product from your childhood do you miss?
