Mars Return

I’m in the middle of a Mars return. Astrologically, this means the planet Mars is now transiting directly over my natal Mars. This happens roughly close to every 2 years.
Now Mars is the God of war in mythology, which should give us an idea of some of the attributes associated with this planet: aggression, drive, willpower, domination, competition. The first Mars return happens when we are almost 2 years old, heralding the dreaded “terrible twos”, when a child starts to assert themselves – often in fits and screams and tantrums.
Mars return is often associated with accidents, falls, and the like, as well as a surge in physical energy that needs to find healthy outlets.
For me, an interesting observation this time around has been a number of very violent dreams – the kind where you wake up glad to be alive and see a sunny day. What’s more, the planet Neptune (dreams) is making an opposition to my natal Mars (and hence also opposing transiting Mars). I think this explains violent dreams very well, and actually is helping me to start understand oppositions.
Other “side effects” include:
- having lots of extra work being placed on my desk at work (note that my natal Mars is in Virgo, the sign of duty and responsibility), and not only that, but I have found I generally have the energy to deal with this (whereas a year ago I would not have);
- getting stuck into the garden again (though I garden regularly, so this may be a biased view) – Virgo is the sign associated with gardeners and farmers.
- I can’t say I am any more cranky that my usual though possibly the opposition of Neptune is diffusing some of the more aggressive energy of Mars.
- asserting my need/want for a new laptop Finally, after 6 years, a new Macbook Pro is on its way. Oh, the joy.
Furthermore, I read this about Mars in Wikipedia,
“In ancient Roman religion and myth, Mars (Latin: Mārs, Martis) was the god of war and also an agricultural guardian, a combination characteristic of early Rome.He was second in importance only to Jupiter, and (Neptune) and he was the most prominent of the military gods in the religion of the Roman army. Most of his festivals were held in March, the month named for him (Latin Martius), and in October, which began and ended the season for military campaigning and farming.
Under the influence of Greek culture, Mars was identified with the Greek god Ares,whose myths were reinterpreted in Roman literature and art under the name of Mars. But the character and dignity of Mars differed in fundamental ways from that of his Greek counterpart, who is often treated with contempt and revulsion in Greek literature.“
I didn’t know about Mars also being an agricultural guardian – but then again, my knowledge of astrology and mythology is rather basic. I am saving up to start some Kepler College courses in 2014, with a view to complete their Diploma eventually.
