Let me be your travel guide (and please be mine)

Reizen en schrijven voor je werk heeft ontelbare voordelen. Je ziet, op kosten van de baas, de leukste plekken op aarde, verblijft vaak in prettige hotels en ontmoet leuke locals onderweg die je de beste tips geven. Maar het blijft wel werk: dus niet op je gemakje uitslapen, ontbijten en een beetje slenteren. Maar vooral een overvolle agenda en 's avonds zere voeten (zoals in Boedapest). En nog zowat: je komt vaak met volgeschreven notitieboekjes en tientallen tips (die niet in de reisgidsen staan!) terug... en dan zegt je hoofdredacteur: 'Tjsa, we hebben niet zo veel plaats dit keer. Kun je je artikel een beetje inkorten?'. Maar die tips vragen er gewoon om om gedeeld te worden, dat moet gewoon! Anders krijg ik pukkeltjes, ofzo.

Traveling and writing for works has so many advantages. You get to see the most beautiful places in earth (and your boss is paying for it), stay in really nice hotels and meets loads of lovely locals along the way who show you all the hidden gems. But it's work afterall: so no sleeping in and having long lush breakfasts and wandering around at an easy pace. Nope, the scedule is completely full from early morning till late at night, which means soar feet (like in Budapest). And another disadvantage is that you'll come back with your notebook completely filled with hints, tips and tricks (all of whch can't be found in travel guides!) and then your editor says: 'oh, we don't have so much space, could you shorten your article with one page?' But these hints and tips are just itching to be shared! I think that if I wouldn't share them I would get a rash or something.

Where I discovered that West-USA has gorgious national parks, crazy hippie towns and really great Tex-Mex food, Las Vegas is like Disney World for grown ups and ate the best Chinese food in my life in China Town in San Francisco.
Na elke reis, zowel voor mijn werk als mijn eigen vakanties, kwamen er weer nieuwe tips bij. En die lagen daar dan maar, niets te doen. Onuitstaanbaar! Stapels visitekaartjes van een verborgen restaurantje hier of daar, flyers van een bijzondere crafters markt, het adres van een B&B die zo veel beter was dan welk hotel dan ook (en goedkoper!) of een vol geklad schriftje met allemaal gratis of goedkope bezienswaardigheden. Daar moest ik wat mee! En zo werd Mooistestedentrips.nl geboren.
After every trip, for work and during my own vacations abroad, I would collect new hints and tips. And then they would just lay there, doing nothing. I couldn't stand it! So many business cards, from cute, hidden from the crowds restaurants, or flyers from funky crafters markets, or the adress of a B&B that was much better (and cheaper) than any hotel I had ever been to and notebooks filled with what you could do for free in so many cities around the woirld. I just had to do something about that. And that's how my travel blog Mooistestedentrips.nl was born.

On my own in New York where I discovered that the best things are for free. Like walks across the Brooklyn Bridge, a ferry ride to Staten Island (so you can see the statue of Liberty from up close), strolling through Central Park and many, many museums.
In eerste instantie was de website gewoon één grote vergaarbak van mijn eigen tips. Maar de laatste tijd begon het wel een beetje te kriebelen. Ik wilde eigenlijk wel wat meer met de blog. Zeker sinds ik weet hoe leuk bloggen in het algemeen kan zijn, hoe leuk de interactie met bezoekers kan zijn (want die hebben vaak ook genoeg leuks te melden... dat weet ik allemaal dankzij jullie, steek die maar in je zak!). Dus toen ik vorig jaar de boel wilde opfrissen, besloot ik er écht wat mee te doen. Een héél nieuw design én een blog eraan vast!
Now, at first the website was just a big dump for all my hints and trips. And that was all fun and all. But lately, I wanted more. Through this blog I've discovered how great it is to interact with your visitors (your comments and tips are priceless!) and I guess I also wanted that for my travel website. So when I had to make some changes to my website last year, I decided to think big. I picked a whole new design ánd attached a blog too.

In Cuba (Havana) where the people have nothing, but went out of their way to make us as comfortable as possible. Where I discovered pristine jungle, wondeful revolutionary murals dating back to the 50's and where I ate street food wthout getting a tummy bug.
Nou mag ik dan webredacteur zijn, maar een hele website ombouwen en er ook nog een beetje mooi uit laten zien... dat gaat mij net een beetje te ver. Dus schakelde ik een getalenteerde webbouwer in en die hielp mij om in een paar maanden een volwassen website en blog uit de grond te stampen. Aan de ene kant vind je er een overzicht van allerlei steden met algemene tips (en ja, die komen dus allemaal uit die schriftjes) en aan de andere kant een blog waar ik gewoon een beetje kan tetteren en meteen plaats heb voor foto's. Ik zorgde er zelfs voor dat er nu comments geplaats kunnen worden bij de blogberichten, wel zo aardig als bezoekers misschien wat aan te vullen of toe te voegen hebben.
Now, I am a webeditor but rebuilding an entire website and making sure it all looks a little nice, that's really a bridge too far. So I contacted this talented webdude who helped me to build a girgious and grown-up website in a couple of months. I am so happy with with. On the one hand there's tips you can find for the many cities that I've visited (and yes, the tips from all those notebooks are there) and a blog where I can just chat away about what I've been seeing and where I can post some more pics. And now there's the possibility to comment too! Easy does it. I guess if you'd like to follow, you should do so via Google Chrome and translate the website in whatever language you'd prefer to read.

One of my latest journeys to Morocco, maybe one of the most beautiul countries I've ever visited. It has everything a country need: beautiful cities like Marrakech and Fez, deserts, Kasbahs, camels, great food, and lovely small sea towns.
En om de blog helemaal volwassen te maken (ja, het hele proces lijkt wel een bepaald ritueel), meldde ik hem ook aan bij Bloglovin'. Dat is toch wel de gemakkelijkste manier van volgen vind ik. En om de geboorte van mijn volwassen website te vieren, geef ik elke maand (ja! Elke maand!) een 100% stedengids naar keuze weg aan elke inschrijver van de nieuwsbrief. Dus kom eens langs en laat een goede tip achter ;-)
