Flower in square (spring blanket): crochet tutorial

Wat een leuke reacties op mijn gehaakte bloemendeken. Die bloemen in vierkanten, dat is wel wat hè? Het schreeuwt wat mij betreft gewoon om zomer. Vandaar dat ik het patroon opschreef en het met jullie deel. Het is stap voor stap en helemaal niet moeilijk.

I got some great comments on my crochet flower blanket. Those flowers in squares are so nice aren't they? They're just begging for summer to start. Anyway, I've scribbled down the pattern and wouldn't mind at all sharing it with you. So just follow the step to step tutorial, it's not hard at all.

Wat heb je nodig?

• Katoen-acryl garen (of alleen katoen of acryl) in verschillende kleuren, dat je op naald 4,5 kunt haken. Ik gebruikte Softfun van Scheepjeswol.
• Haaknaald 4,5
• Maasnaald voor de eindjes.

LET OP!
Dit patroon kan een beetje bobbelig zijn als je te strak haakt. Ik haak héél losjes van mezelf, dus ik heb er geen problemen mee. Weet je van jezelf dat je strak haakt: pak een naald van 0,5 of 1 mm groter. Dus: relax, wees zen, ga een rondje lopen... en daarna: lekker losjes haken.
TIP! Bobbelt je werk toch nog iets te veel? Span het dan op! Ik span vierkantjes vaak op op mijn strijkplank, spuit er wat water over met de plantenspuit en laat ze dan drogen. Hier nog een handige tutorial.
What do you need?

• Cotton-acrylic yarn (or just cotton or acrylic) that you can crochet on hook 4.5 mm (USA G, UK 7).
• A 4.5 mm (UK 7, USA G) hook.
• A needle to weave in ends.

NOTE! This pattern can turn out a little bobbly, unless you crochet nice and losely. I crochet very losely, so this pattern works out perfect for me. But if you are a tight crocheter maybe use a hook that's a size or even 2 sizes bigger. So, just relax, do some yoga... and then start this pattern ;-)

TIP! If the work is still a bit bobbly, your work will definately benefit from wet blocking. It will leave your work soft and nice and square. I use my iron board for blocking, but here you can read a good tutorial on wet blocking.
Oké, aan de slag!! Alright, lets'get cracking!

Haak 8 losse en sluit met een halve vaste, zodat je een ring hebt.
Chain 8 and close with a slip stitch (sc) to form a ring

Haak 3 losse (telt als 1 stokje) en haak 15 stokjes in de ring. Sluit met een halve vaste.
Chain 3 (counts as 1 dc) and crochet 15 dc's into the ring. Close with a sc.

Haak 3 losse (telt als 1 stokje) 2 losse en 1 stokje in dezelfde steek. **Sla 1 steek over. 1 stokje 2 losse en 1 stokje in de volgende steek.** Herhaal dit tot je rond bent. Halve vaste in de 3rde losse van het begin.
Chain 3 (counts as 1dc) chain 2 and 1 dc in the same stitch. **Skip a stitch. 1 dc chain 2 1 dc in the next stitch.** Repeat untill the end of the round, sc in the 3rd chain from the start to finish the ring.

Maak een halve vaste om in het eerste 2l-boogje terecht te komen. Haak 3 losse (staat voor 1 stokje), 1 stokje 2 losse 2 stokjes in het boogje. **Haak een vaste in de ruimte tussen de boogjes, 2 stokjes 2 losse 2 stokjes in het volgende boogje**. Herhaal dit tot je rond bent. Sluit de ronde door een halve vaste in de 3rde losse van het begin te haken.
Sc into the loop to start. Chain 3 (is one dc), 1 dc chain 2 2 dc into the loop. **Crochet a slip stitch into the space between the loops, then 2 dc chain 2 2 dc into the next loop**. Reapeat until the end of the round. Sc in the 3rd chain from the start of the round to finish the round.
In principe heb je nu een bloem gehaakt! Dus vind je het wel mooi geweest? Hecht dan af en klaar ben je. Maar wil je dit veranderen in een vierkantje waarvan je een deken kunt haken... kijk dan nog even verder.

Wissel van kleur en begin in één van de 2l-boogjes van een 'bloemblaadje'. Haak 3 losse (is 1 stokje) 1 stokje 3 losse 2 stokjes in hetzelfde boogje. **3 losse, vaste op het volgende bloemblaadje, 3 losse, 2 stokje 3 losse 2 stokjes in het volgende bloemblaadje**. Herhaal tot te rond bent en maak vast met een hv in de eerste 3 losse.
LET OP: Je werk trekt en buigt nu heel erg. Dit is een beetje vervelend, maar raak niet in paniek: de volgende ronde zal het werk recht trekken!
Swop colours, starting in the chain2-loop of one of the 'petals'. Chain 3 (equals 1 dc) 1 dc chain 3 and 2 dc in the same 'petal'. **chain 3 and make a sc onto the next petal, chain 3, 2 dc chain 3 2dc in the next petal**, repeat until the end of the round, sc into the first chain 3.
NOTE: Your work will be pulling and bobbling a LOT after this round. But that's okay, don't panic. The next round will make it all better.

Slip stitch to start in the chain3-loop of the last round. Chain 3 (is 1 dc) 2 dc chain 1 and 3 dc into the same corner-loop. **Chain 1, 4 dc in the next loop, chain 1, 4 dc into the next loop, chain 1, 3 dc chain 1 3 dc into the corner loop.** Repeat until the end of the round, sc into the first chain 3 to fasten off.

En daar istie: je bloem in een vierkant! Het is een kant-achtig patroon, heel luchtig en perfect voor de zomer. Als je graag dekens of kussens maakt en vierkantjes het liefst aan elkaar naait, kun je gewoon een hele berg van deze vierkanten maken, de vierkanten opspannen en vervolgens aan elkaar naaien.
Maar omdat ik lui ben aangelegd, heb ik een tutorial gemaakt om deze vierkanten 'as you go' aan elkaar te haken. Dat haakt lekker snel door. Ik raad wel aan om de deken op te spannen voordat je aan de rand begint.
And there it is: your flower in a square. It's such a lacy square, I like it a lot. Just perfect for summer. If you like to make blankets or pillow cases and prefer to sew the squares together, then just make a bunch of these squares, wet block them, then sew them together.
But because I'm such a lazy bugger, I made a tutorial to join these squares as you go. This is a fast method to make a blanket (or so I think), though I recommend you to wet block the squares of the blanket before you start the edging.

Joining the squares as you go

Je haakt eerst een ronde rond de bloem, zoals een paar stappen geleden. Als je aan de laatste tour begin, maak je als je in de hoek komt 3 stokjes, maar in plaats van een losse te haken, haak je (bovenlangs!) een halve vaste in de hoek van het andere vierkantje, haak vervolgens 3 stokjes in je hoek. Volg nu het patroon van de laatste ronde, maar in plaats van een losse haak je een halve vaste in de losse opening van het tegenovergestelde vierkantje.

You crochet the first white round around the flower, then you start the last round. When you reach a corner you crochet 3 dc's. Instead of crochet a chain next you slip stitch (along the top side) of the corner stitch of the other square. Next you crochet another 3 dc's into your corner. Follow the pattern of the last round, but instead of a chain 1 you slipstitch into the chain space of the other square.

Zoals je hierboven ziet dus, ik hoop dat het een beetje duidelijk is. Maar in principe werkt het zoals elke 'join as you go' methode.

So, exactly like shown above. I hope it's clear enough. But basically it works like any other 'join as you go' method.

Zoals je ziet trekt het 'join as you go' de vierkanten ook mooi recht. Dus paniek over bobbelen is niet meer nodig. Bobbelt het toch een beetje, dan werkt opspannen echt heel goed! Voor mijn deken haakte ik 8 vierkanten in de breedte en 13 in de lengte. Je krijgt dan een deken van ongeveer 1 meter bij 1.50 meter. Om de deken een beetje stevig te maken, moet er wel een rand omheen. Volgende week zet ik de tutorial online van de rand die ik om deze deken haakte.

As you can see the 'join as you go method' really straightens the squares out. To make the surface nice and flat, it's a good idea to wet block as you go along. It gives a perfect finish to your blanket. I made this blanket 8 squares wide and 13 squares long. To make the blanket nice and strong, it does need edging. Now, I am writing the tutorial for the edging I did on this blanket. So hold your horses ;-)
