Crochet dachshund (and 3 crochet tips for amigurumi beginners)

Eigenlijk ben ik meer een poezenmens. Ik maak graag een praatje met de poezen hier in de buurt, die altijd braaf een kopje komen geven en even willen neuzen in de boodschappentas, en ik mis onze zwarte gekkie nog elke dag. Maar toen ik deze teckel voorbij zag komen, moest ik hem gewoon maken. Teckels hebben iets ongelofelijk guitigs en volgens mij kunnen ze ook best een beetje stout zijn. Als compensatie voor die veel te korte pootjes.

Honestly, I am more a cat person than a dog person. I like to have a little chat with the neighbourhood cats who always walk over to me, give me a little headbud and take a peek in my grocery bags. I miss our crazy little black cat every day. But when I saw this dachshund, I just had to make one. Dachshunds are just so waggish and they're quite naughty too I think, to make up for their stumpy little legs.

Maar goed, één ding. Ik ben dus niet zo'm amigurumi talent. Ik haakte ooit eens een vis (ja, een hele) en de olifant die ik ooit haakte was een echte uitdaging. Maar dit patroon van de teckel is echt heel gemakkelijk te volgen en ik besloot om niet te gaan voor Catania of ander glanskatoen, maar voor dikker katoen (Drops Paris en Rico Creative Cotton) en haaknaald 4,5. Ik vind amigurumi's maken zo ontzettend prutsen en met dikker garen en een grotere naald krijg je gewoon iets grotere onderdelen.

Just one thing, I am not a great amigurumi talent. I once crocheted a fish (ha, yes a whole one) and the elephant I made was quite the challenge. But the pattern of the dachshund (to be found here) is rather easy! I just decided not to use 4 ply cotton but something a bit more chunky. I choose Drops Paris and Rico Creative cotton and used hook 4.5 mm. Amigurumis are fidly enough and by using chunkier yarn all the different parts are a bit bigger.

Maar al die verschillende onderdelen tot één teckel maken, dat vond ik nogal wat. Pff. Hoe doen échte amigurumi fanaten dat een beetje fluks? Ik ben echt met elk pootje in gevecht geweest. Eén pootje blijft ook een beetje ontsnappen, ik heb hem nog geopereerd... maar het mocht niet baten. Het hoofd recht krijgen was ook nog een hele klus en ik heb nog een oortransplantatie uitgevoerd.

But to make one dachshuns from all those different parts, that's quite the challenge. I truely admire all those peeps crocheting amigurumis all the time. I literally battled to get every paw into place. One paw is still a bit naughty, even after I operated on it. And to get the head from wobbling, what a task! I also preformed an ear transplant. But there you go.

Heb je zin om ook zo'n teckel te maken? Doen hoor! Het is echt een ontzettend leuk patroontje en je kunt zo veel of weinig variëren met kleuren als je zelf wilt. Ik koos voor pistache, grijs, petrol en paars, maar kies vooral een kleurtje dat je zelf leuk vindt.

Ga je voor het eerste een amigurumi maken? Dan heb ik 3 tips voor je (totaal aan den lijve ondervonden):

1. Kies voor dik garen in een kleurtje. Als je met dun garen begint (bijvoorbeeld Catania of Phildar 3) kun je lastiger steken tellen en krijg je kleine onderdelen. Kies liever voor bijvoorbeeld Drops Paris or Rico Creative Cotton of voor een merino wol. Ga voor haaknaald 4,5 of 5. Het eindresultaat is ook nog eens een lekkere grote knuffel. En wie wil er nou geen grote knuffel? Dat dacht ik!

2. Laat aan het einde van elk 'lichaamsdeel' een lang eind garen hangen. Minstens 25-30 centimeter, je hebt echt wel wat garen nodig om dingen aan elkaar te naaien.

3. Gebruik een steekmarkeerder. Bij het haken van dekens gebruik ik die nooit, maar bij zo'n amigurumi kun je echt niet zonder. Ik steek ze elke tour in de eerste steek. Je kunt een steekmarkeerder kopen bij je plaatselijke wolwinkel, maar op Etsy vind je ook hele mooie.

Wanna make a dachshund? Go on, you know you want to! The pattern is so cute and you can use as much or little colours as you like. I used pistachio, grey, petrol and purple, but just pick a colour you love.

Are you a beginner when it comes to amigurumis, don't worry. I'm with you sister! I have 3 tips for you (all discovered through my amigurumi struggle):

1. Chose chunky yarn rather than 4ply. If you use cotton for hook 3mm it's hard to count stitches and you'll end up with áll these little body parts, so frustrating. Rather pick chunkier yarn. For this project I picked Drops Paris and Rico Creative Cotton. But basically a yarn that you can use on hook 4.5 or 5 mm is advisable. Plus, you'll end up with a lovely big stuffed toy, and who doesn't like that?

2. At the end of each bodypart, leave a looooong end of yarn. At least 25-30 cm. You'll need a lot of yarn to sew up all the parts.

3. Use a stitch marker. I never use one for crocheting blackets, but with amigurumis, you just need one. I put mine on the first stitch of every round and that makes counting your stitches so much easier. You can buy stitch marker in every yarn shop, but there are some pretty ones on Etsy too.
