‘Karaoke’ is so soothing to listen to, it’s almost delicate. There are moments that are really beautiful, like the simple, ‘If the spotlight makes you nervous…if you’re looking for a purpose’, and how he lets the song breathe in between those two lines. There’s also the subtle flip of that line at the end of the song to, ‘But the spotlight makes you nervous, And you’re looking for a purpose,’ giving some finality to the relationship he’s been grappling with. I also love, ‘I remember when you thought I was joking, now I’m off singing karaoke…further than I’ve ever been,’ there’s something very intimate about that, as if it was taken from a real conversation, a private joke that we’re being let in on.

I could have done without the ironic-wedding planner line, but that’s my only complaint. Is the first time you get hurt in love the deepest cut, or do you just always remember it, cos it was the first time?
