This Is What It Sounds like to Land on a Comet
The Cometary Acoustic Surface Sounding Experiment (CASSE) on Philae recorded this two second clip of the lander’s first contact with the surface of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. Sensors on the base of Philae’s three feet acted like a sonar and revealed that Philae first came in contact with a soft layer of material and then a hard, possibly icy layer a few milliseconds later.
