Building A Home: Progress So Far

Exactly a month ago today, I shared our news that Joshua, Eden and I were embarking on a new adventure-- the build of our future home! I really want to make a point to document our journey along the way because it will be something really special to look back on. So far, this has been our timeline:

August 18: Signed contract for build
September 26: Designed interior elements at home gallery
October 2: Permits sent out to county
October 14: Permits cleared to build
October 17: 1st sight of a bulldozer-- breaking ground!
October 18: Forms up around house perimeter

I have been thinking a lot about this house lately and what it means for us. We are mapping out the rooms and the hallways where our babies will run and where our children will grow up. The backyard is where our kids will play in the sandbox and chase around snow flurries when it snows in the winter (we don't get much but hey I am still counting on it). The garage is where our boys will learn how to use tools with Joshua and the kitchen is where our girls will learn to cook with me. The stairs are where our kids will one day walk down to show off their Prom attire. It is more than a house.

With our first home, we learned a lot. The most important lesson learned was that location is great but a great floor plan is everything. We absolutely love this new home's floor plan. And since our home is where we will be spending the majority of our time, this was the most important aspect of choosing this home to begin with. We will have a tad bit smaller back yard, and we don't have the view we used to (it's still beautiful, just different), but when we sat down and put a list together of what was most important to us, those things were not as important to us as the actual home itself.

We also came into the issue with bedrooms. Knowing we want to have a lot of kids (i.e., 4-5), this needed to be a home that was not ridiculously large but also one that we could grow in to. As much as I love a one-story home, it was just not possible in our desired location and with the amount of bedrooms we will eventually need. So we found this floorplan where we have the desired amount of bedrooms and an upstairs loft that can be converted into an additional, enclosed bedroom down the road when our brood gets larger. But in the meantime, it will be open and airy until we get to that point. We are thinking of making it into a media center/office.

More updates and pictures to come as progress is made in the coming weeks.
Thanks for sharing our journey with us! xo
