Guess What! Instant Coffee Isn’t as Bad as You Thought

New York turned me into a hardcore coffee snob. I stick my nose up when I walk by places like Starbucks (I still like their skinny lattes though…shhh), and I’m willing to go out of my way to go to the best coffee shops the city has to offer. Unfortunately, those fancy pour overs can get pricey, so I usually just make my own with fresh beans, a burr grinder, a Chemex, and a goose neck kettle. Fancy, right?

But what’s a girl to do when she decides to give up her apartment, live out of Airbnb’s and then go to Africa for six weeks? She misses her fancy coffee. That’s exactly what happened to me.

I like coffee for two reasons: the taste and the caffeine. I could have easily switched over to tea, but I just couldn’t do it. I just love coffee too much! So I did something bad…I tried instant coffee. And you know what? It wasn’t that bad! It was actually better than an American favorite — Dunkin Donuts.

So if you’re on a tight budget, or you’re going on a hotel-less vacation, you’ll be okay in the caffeine department!

Below are my tips for making your instant coffee taste super duper rad:

1. Don’t add too much powder

A teaspoon is all you need. The more you add, the worse it’ll begin to taste.

2. Drink it hot

Hot instant coffee tastes pretty okay. Instant coffee that’s luke warm or cold? Not so much.

3. Store it in the fridge

Don’t keep your instant coffee in the pantry. Storing it in the fridge will prevent it from getting stale.

4. Experiment

No two instant coffees are the same. I highly recommend the instant coffee from Maxwell House or the instant coffee singles from Folgers. But do your own experimentation.

Have you ever tried instant coffee? What were your thoughts?
