Kat Von D Lock-It Tattoo Foundation Review
I’m so excited about today’s foundation review because it’s one I really LOVE. It’s not for all of you, and probably not for every day, but it’s a good one for sure. If it’s not what you are looking for, I’ll be reviewing a ton more in this series, both high end and drugstore. Today’s review is…Kat Von D Lock-It Tattoo Foundation, which I’ll admit that I put off buying for awhile, strictly for personal reasons. She dated Jesse James right after he cheated on Sandra Bullock and the whole thing just grossed me out.
However — make up is make up so I finally broke down. I’m only so strong, people!
What it promises: Kat created this foundation to provide exceptional coverage, without compromising a smooth, striking finish. Formulated with 21 percent pigment, this powerful formula was developed to match a broad range of skintones with bold coverage—the proprietary pigments can even effectively cover tattoos. The combination of raw materials and the best siliconic elastomers and siliconic esters provide 24-hour wear with transfer resistance. Natural polymers absorb oil for a matte, soft finish and the added emollients provide a velvety texture for perfectly smooth, hydrated skin.
Applied With: I moisturized with Mary Kay TimeWise Day Solution and primed with Mally Beauty Perfect Prep Poreless Primer. I applied the foundation using a slightly damp Beauty Blender Sponge.

Coverage: Full
Pros: This foundation DOES stay on ALL DAY. I’ve often put it on at 6 am and it still looks fresh at dinner. I do not need concealer with this foundation — in fact, it’s the only foundation or concealer I’ve found that does not crease under my eyes. It stays smooth and crease-less under my eyes all day long. If you tend to have oily skin, this stuff keeps the shine at bay — it’s nice and matte.
Cons: This stuff dries FAST. Apply in small sections, only using a small amount, or it will start to dry and get smudgy. It does okay with combination skin, but if you’re skin is straight up DRY, it will not work for you. The dry spots will definitely flake up and be very obvious. Because of the pigmentation and coverage, this can make your skin look flat. You definitely need bronze, blush and a bit of highlight with this.
This foundation is a definite staple in my collection. I’m a full coverage girl, so I love it, but if you want something that looks natural…this is not for you. Even lightly applied, this foundation looks like you are wearing make up.
I read tons of reviews before I purchased, and the main complaint was that it looked cakey. I have found that when I apply the Kat Von D foundation in small sections, using my Beauty Blender, it’s not cakey at all. Just remember that a little goes a long way and work on one section of your face at a time, bouncing the sponge off your face.
I mentioned in the Cons list that this foundation can look flat. That is because it’s full coverage — none of your natural coloring will show through. Unless you want to look like a mannequin, take a few minutes to apply some bronzer, blush and highlighter to give your face some color and dimension. For highlighter, you don’t need anything fancy…I use a shimmery white eyeshadow. A shimmery Champagne colored eyeshadow will work as well — just run some along the bridge of your nose, under your eyebrow arch, on the bow of your lips, and a triangle on your chin and between your eyebrows. Blend slightly with your fingertips and you’re good.
The above photo is one I took on my phone about a month ago…I had the foundation on for 9 hours at the time of the photo. As you can see, it definitely looks like I’m wearing make-up, but there are no weird creases under my eyes or anything — it’s still pretty flawless.
Kat Von D also has a concealer that I’m considering trying — there are some days I switch up my foundation to something lighter, but I still need coverage under my eyes. Sometimes I just use this foundation for concealer and use a lighter foundation for my face if I’m not feeling the full coverage thing.
