Belonging

I just came across The Glowing Edge today, and I'm in love. I may or may not have spent several hours going over the entire boxing tag within Lisa's blog. Everything is great- the topics, the writing, the advice- I'm in love.
A couple weeks ago I did some hard thinking about this blog, and how I want to use this space. One of the things that I decided was that I wanted to start writing regularly about boxing. I write about my other hobbies, so it seemed strange to avoid writing about boxing. True, it doesn't seem to fit in quite as well with knitting and sewing, but I still love it.
This essay from The Glowing Edge, Why Boxers Can't Lie, struck a chord with me. I read it a couple times through. It got me thinking about how I feel about boxing, and about blogging about boxing.
I started boxing at the park district when I was 15. I took group classes there that focused more on cardio than on boxing form for three years. When I left for college, I wanted to keep boxing, but couldn't find anywhere at school to do so. It wasn't until my final semester in school that I found the boxing club there.
The first couple weeks were rough. I was so out of shape and struggled to make it through practices. Just like Lisa said in the essay, it doesn't really matter what you say you can do, only what you actually deliver on. It didn't matter that I had been hitting a bag in my garage during summer break for 7 years. What mattered was how hard I worked. It wasn't until a couple months in, when people started dropping out due to the stress of the school year, that I began to feel accepted by the club members.
I feel like boxing blogging will be the same. Right now, I'm a little apprehensive about posting about boxing. I only read a handful of the boxing bloggers, and I don't know how I'm going to fit in to this niche, or in to my own blog, really. I'm afraid that I'll write a couple articles and not be able to keep up, or that I won't even know that what I'm writing is completely irrelevant to the genre.
But as I interpreted the article, the only way to be a part of something is to jump in and prove that you belong.
