So, the temperature may be cooling down, but many of my favorite outdoor activities (like football games and weekend tailgates) are just heating up.

Now, when it comes to buying a cute winter coat, what’s on your check-list? Functional? Of course. Fashionable? Naturally. But is it inexpensive or worthy of a splurge?
Think of it this way: If you buy a $400 winter jacket today and wear it for five days every week for the next 12(ish) weeks of winter, the cost per wear is around $6. Pull it out again next season (or if you live in my former city of Chicago, well into April of this year) and that jacket just paid for itself.
Don’t worry if that price point is on the high-end of your budget, though — there’s plenty of options here that fall well under that price point (mainly from Express, Gap and more). Scroll down to get started.
Neutral hues are always a safe bet — in a good way. They’ll pair well with everything in your closet. And more specifically, camel is the new black this season.
If beige isn’t the best color for you but you want to get on board with this classic, try topping it off with a scarf in a bright, flattering color.
Fit-and-flare coats are flattering on all body types. They’re high-on-style and immensely versatile, too. I love this season’s popular wrap style! The knotted-at-the-waist effect is slimming, so you’ll look svelte even if you’ve piled on the layers (and are now, say, sweating profusely on the subway).
Admittedly, I’m having a serious plaid moment. Fortunately, this season’s pretty plaid coats all come in unique shapes and bright, cheerful hues. An easy way to add festive flair to my otherwise mostly-black New York uniform.
If you need a really warm coat — and I mean, Chicago in February type-of-warm — down and/or quilted is a great option. My favorite brands are Canada Goose, and I’ve had this jacket for nearly two years. I love that it’s lined with goose-down fill and yet doesn’t feel heavy to toss on.
You probably already have one of these in your closet, but try a fresh take on the moto jacket this season by opting for a piece in a surprisingly subtle hue.
My favorite! These (faux) fur-trimmed coats are sure to keep you warm-and-chic all winter.
