The Heiress

Last night I saw Cousin Matthew on Broadway!

Oh, wait. Let me back up. Cousin Matthew is from Downton Abbey (naturally) and I saw him performing in The Heiress. If you want to read what the play is about click here if you want to know what I thought about it, keep reading.

I, for one, decided to go into it not knowing anything except who the actors would be. I saw Jessica Chastain on Letterman the other night when David was also coincidentally on (with Conor Maynard) and I knew Cousin Matthew (Dan Stevens) and David Strathairn would be in it. Other than that I was ready to be surprised and honestly I wasn't expecting too much. I come from a long line of musical watchers/singers/hoarders (what?) and have rarely seen a play where there was limited to no music. Apparently, I have been missing out!

As it turned out Jessica Chastain was busy promoting her new movie and we had her understudy, Mairin Lee. We heard a few people asking about her and promptly leaving when they learned this, but it really made no difference to me. I love understudies! As we sat down to watch I remembered that the play was 3 hours and panicked a little in my mind. I can barely sit through a 3 hour movie and this was a play called The Heiress set in the 1800s with no set changes.

In fact one of my favorite stories to tell about my youth was when I went to a speech competition with my sister (do people really do these things?) and as I sat down to listen to all of the speakers the teacher or judge or whomever she was said "Please note that you may not leave the room until all of the speakers have finished. If you need to leave do so now." I realize now that it's totally normal to say something like that, but at the time my 3rd grade brain took that as a sign that I needed to get the heck out of there and I ran out of the room only to spend the rest of the time looking through the tiny window trying to hear my sister. What a weird kid.

WOAH! I really digressed on that one. Back to the story....

Could my mind handle it and would I fall asleep? These questions plagued me as the play began. Turns out that I had nothing to fear. I am an adult! Dan Stevens was dreamy and amazing, David Strathairn was simply perfect, and my favorite character was Lavinia Pennimen, the aunt of the heiress. She was great comic relief and was so natural on the stage. Super talented company and I'm so glad that I was able to go.

The Heiress is doing a short run until February 10 so I would highly recommend that you check it out if you're in the area.
