FYB Book Review of Gone Girl

I read this book earlier in the year, but since the movie is coming out this Friday October 3, 2014, I decided to slip in the review now before I review Lauren Graham’s Someday, Someday, Maybe, which I mentioned in my last review. I’m almost finished with it and still loving it. I have a feeling you will too!

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn is a kaleidoscope of views pertaining to one marriage, an abduction, a secret diary, loads of lies, and multiple scenarios – real and imaginary – that make up the lives of Nick and Amy Dunne.

Is Amy the perfect wife, the grown up married version of her parents’ fortune making creation Amazing Amy, the ‘flawless’ main character of a children’s book who can do no wrong? Is Nick the not-so-perfect husband who truly loves his wife, but may have lost his way somewhere within the five years of their marriage?

Or are they both lying to each other…and to us the readers?

The first half of this book is told in different parts by Nick in present tense and by Amy through her diary in past tense. I was glued to it from the beginning because I thought it was so different in tone and style, and I definitely couldn’t figure out the story, which is a major plus when reading a thriller.

So I really did enjoy it.

But, since this is a book review and all, I have to be honest as I started to get annoyed with it about 3/4 of the way through. By that time I had figured out what was going on. And for me I felt like I needed it wrapped up. Full disclosure, I hated the ending.

But, looking back on it now I realize that’s the work of a good writer…to elicit a strong response from us as readers, good or bad.

So all in all, I liked the book. Personally I may have changed the ending a bit, but the bulk of the story was fun to read.

It will be interesting to see how the movie comes out. Be sure to pick up a copy and give it a read before you see the movie. It’s always better that way…I think.

Thanks for stopping by!
