all the eastern girls.

cardigan, dress, necklace: f21; sunnies: UO; belt: nordstrom; flats: diy; lipstick: MAC Have you guys seen Girls yet? Saying that I wanted to hate it would be a little too severe, but I didnt think that I would like it. For starters, I saw Tiny Furniture and thought very little of it. Lena Dunhams character bugged me--the way Katniss does in Hunger Games--like no one is that unaware of what is really going on, are they?! Christine knows what Im saying. And again in Girls her character has that same issue--she seems not to get that the guy shes fucking is more or less using her. I find it hard to believe that in real life Dunham herself would ever fall for that. I feel like Dunham would know the guy was using her but would let it happen anyway, for whatever neurotic reason. Aside from that, the first episode hinges on her expecting her parents to foot the bill while she lives in New York. Now I for one have had to have my parents help a lot, both during college and post college. Yes the job market is rough, and yes I went to grad school, and yes I have a debilitating disease that has prevented me from working at times. However (and this is a huge however), I never expected them to foot the bill while I lived in New York or anywhere else for that matter. Ive suffered living in my sisters old bedroom, across the hall from my parents, in Spokane. And Ive worked shitty jobs that sucked my soul. So at times Dunhams character feels, honestly, naive, dumb and spoiled--which I am relatively sure Dunham isnt. Which means shes playing characters who are in order to relate to more females, and that is just depressing. Her two best friends seem more authentic to me, especially in the 2nd and 3rd episodes. Dunham gets better too. I only dont like the cousin--whos constantly in a Juicy sweat suit, in her Pottery Barn Kids decorated apartment, with Sex and the City posters and Sex and the City dialogue. Trying too hard/much again to create some sort of female archetype. And on top of that nonsense shes a virgin. At 22. Not unheard of I guess, but the actress who plays her is also a lesbian on Mad Men, so that probably adds to the unbelievability of her as a Juicy wearing naive sorority type girl--who makes mood boards listening to Colbie Caillat and carries around a copy Hes Just Not that Into You, the book. And so there you have it. Dunham herself and Zosia Mamet, who plays the virgin, both seem like theyre trying too hard. The other two girls, so far, ring truer to me, my friends, and the girls I know. It seems as though Dunham just wanted to make sure that each of her friends was given a role--cue lots of cameos by her former co-stars. But, I cant hate on that. You better believe if one of my friends was given the chance to write and direct a show on HBO Id be expecting a guest spot. And Dunham has a daunting task, she cant write and direct the perfect show. But she has managed to do a pretty damn good job.
