Designer Craft Blog Connection: Sticky Stick Challenge - Woven Ribbon Pencil Basket

Sticky Sticks Woven Ribbon Pencil Basket

Time for another Designers Craft Connection Blog Hop Challenge! And this month the hop was graciously sponsored by Sticky Sticks - which are a great new craft product with the great slogan of "No glue, no mess - MORE FUN!!" And they really are fun! Sticky Sticks are basically flat wood sticks - sort of like popsicle sticks - but with the clever addition of an self-adhesive square on one end which makes them perfect for quick crafts. I don't know why but when I first looked at the Sticky Sticks, I thought "basket weaving". So here's my project which is an easy and quick way to make a basket using a small chipboard box as a base and some ribbon. I had a great time making this and now my pencils (and I have lots) have a home!

Be sure to visit all the other participating designers by clicking on the button at the end of the post.

Here's how:

Sticky Sticks Woven Ribbon Pencil Basket

Materials:

Tools

  • Ink stamp pad - black
  • Ink stamp - flowers and leaves
  • Black marker
  • White glue & sticky dots
  • Clothes pins
  • Scissors

1. Pull the white release paper off a Sticky Stick to expose the adhesive. Adhere it to the side of the chipboard box. Continue adhering Sticky Sticks around the box until complete leaving a little gap between sticks.

2. To brace the sides of the basket, cut four sticks to the length of each side of the box.

3. Glue the cut sticks to the top insides of the basket.

4. Use clothespins to hold the sticks together tightly while they dry.

5. Draw a tree on each side of the basket with the black marker. Play and have fun at this!

6. Stamp flowers and leaves all over the drawn tree branches.

7. Depending on the width of your ribbon and the height of your basket, cut a length of ribbon that is four times the perimeter of the basket. Adjust accordingly if your ribbon is thin. Stamp on one side of the ribbon.

8. Secure one end of the ribbon with a glue dot on the inside of the basket and start weaving! Continue until you come up against the top horizontal braces then trim the ribbon and secure the end with another glue dot.

That's it! Wouldn't this make a fun kids craft? They can make little baskets to keep track items like long envelopes and notepads which always somehow just end up living in stacks. And it's a great way to use up spare ribbon and little boxes. I know you'll have fun playing with Sticky Sticks! Enjoy!
