He will give us more than we can handle.

we’ve all heard that good-intentioned remark when going through something hard in our lives—”God doesn’t give us more than we can handle…” That promise refers to the verse in the Bible in 1 Corinthians 10:13 (NIV)

“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”

but as we continue on this difficult journey with Hazel’s seizures, I am repeatedly troubled by this idea that “God doesn’t give us more than we can handle.” it begs the questions:

if He doesn’t, then…..

am i expected to “handle” this on my own?

am i supposed to be “strong enough” to carry the burden and deal with it in my own strength?

should i feel guilty and ashamed when it all feels completely overwhelming and i feel completely inadequate to do anything of worth?

no, i believe the Lord does allow struggles into my life because it is a way for me to realize and remember that i can do nothing apart from Him and it shines a light on my need for a Big, Powerful God who knows me, loves me, and cares for my baby girl more than i ever could.

honestly, that’s a relief.

i can’t do this in my own strength and i’m glad i have a Savior who calls me to cast my burdens on Him for His yoke is easy and light. it’s so easy to believe somewhere down deep that you can control things–especially when it comes to your children’s happiness and well-being. it’s simply not true and we are understanding that more clearly than ever before.

jon and i are both weary and burdened, but we are trusting His promise to give us rest and confidence that He will use our story for His glory.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matt 11:28-30

as far as an update on Hazel: she continues to have the arm-jerking seizures and they have increased from 3-4 a day to 7-8 in the past few days. we are discussing the possibility of again, increasing her medicine dosage and will see the neurologist on Dec. 18th where we hope to get much more information. she continues to smile, eat, sleep, and play with dangling toys. to say she is a spot of joy in our house is such an understatement.

we thank God for her every day!
