Natural Habitat

As much as Miranda Kerr could never not be beautiful, I remember one of her earlier interviews in the likes of DOLLY Magazine (when I was still the prepubescent target demographic for likes of DOLLY Magazine) declaring that she felt the most beautiful when she was well rested, and had just stepped out of the shower. After two weeks of stepping out of the shower and not feeling any more like Miranda Kerr, my school teacher explained the sweaty nervousness before public speaking as the product of an unnatural exercise. Humans aren’t meant to get up in front of crowds of people and speak, she said – it’s out of our comfort zone. I subsequently concluded that humans aren’t meant to be Miranda Kerr, either.

Flawless tweenage logic aside, it’s surely true that most of us stretch our bodies and minds beyond their natural habitats, if you’ll have it, every day. That childhood limitation later becomes an escape and sanctuary – indeed, my room is one of the few places where I can be completely calm, multitask to my full capacity, think clearly, dream big, and organise my life in nerdy lines.

By the same token, I place as great an importance on keeping all my shelves dusted, books aligned and loungewear ready, as doing my bit to keep my favourite stretches of sand paradisaical. Since moving closer to the sea, I can’t imagine not being able to go for a swim whenever I’m feeling stuck, or surf time with Alex. While I’m sure most of us will openly admit that we aren’t hardcore environmental activists, nor do we have the excess time in a day to be regulating ocean trash, there are ways in which you can make an affirmative contribution, beyond just not doing the wrong thing, if you can handle my double negatives – I’m not going to preach.

Kind of like I really need to rustle up ten minutes to vacuum, and unpack my suitcase from Seoul.

And like you need to find your happy place and maintain its condition, so that you never become so emotionally stuck that you head down a slippery slope à la Elliot Rodger.

And so, despite this space being so much about a career, a closet, a technological addiction, and traveling to big cities on big jet planes, it’s probably a good idea to get out once in a while, and find some appreciation for what a lot of people are forgetting to protect – that is, themselves, and our natural habitat.

In the lead-up to World Environment Day, I’ll be sharing some of my favourite people in their natural habitats and go-to green brands from David Jones – keep up and get involved.
