Wes Gordon SS15

Although Wes Gordon has certainly honed his ability to embellish with studs and trim with lace, it’s unsurprising that the refined suiting and sexy splits of Spring/Summer 2015 still held all of my attention during our buying appointment a few days ago. When it comes to the likes of Gordon, “well made” is the understatement of the century. Ruth and Natalie‘s repeated exclamations throughout our rack-scouring was how fantastic the garments felt on the body. Every piece was substantial in construction, without being heavy or overwhelming. Regardless of your proportions, dresses hugged in the right places without feeling restrictive. Better yet, none of this was compromised when you moved – skirting in particular part-swished, part-billowed around the legs upon walking. The quality was unquestionable.

The colour palette was distinctly softer, in juxtaposition to a sure-striding woman in touch with the power of her femininity, but there was nothing dreamy about these pinks, creams and whites. I wouldn’t label them pastels, or sorbets, or whatever that candy-coated trend was circa Giles’ unicorn bags.

“Muted” is a better way to describe this: understated, streamlined, and chic (if I even have the liberty of saying chic again – but surely this collection could not be described otherwise).

Where gingham seems to be having a moment on runway, if the rest of NYFW was anything to go by, I far prefer these windowpane checks – not to be confused with plaid, that is. Plaid is to be reserved for Winter months, or Marc by Marc Jacobs rain coats, or long weekends toasting toes and marshmallows in a log cabin somewhere snowy. No, this square check is as elongating as black, and structured to a surprisingly wide range of body shapes – a testament, again, to expert tailoring.

Surely the makings of a CFDA favourite.

Oh wait, he is. And rightly so.
