Take off

Most of my conversations over the past half-week have held the same sentiment: when you’re excited to be getting on a flight for the sole reason that you won’t have to look at your inbox for at least thirteen hours, you know you’re on the brink of burning out.

Indeed, it has been quite the year.

Now don’t get me wrong – I adore Sydney. There are few things that beat the hot saltiness of our Summers, well garnished with coconut body butter and that hazy aroma that linens accumulate after a few hours baking in the sun. I have always liked the idea of that Tim Winton Cloudstreet,early 90s suburban Australia of simmering corrugated roofs, still air, cicadas, bare feet on bitumen, chewed up tennis balls and the Border Collie next door.

The only thing missing from what would have been a perfectly balanced equation is a relaxed disposition and not a bloody care in the world (and perhaps a Border Collie, though Alex‘s Labradoodles would surely have risen to the occasion). At this point in the year, when everybody is trying to fit in as much as possible before the planet breaks to overeat and get their sparkle on, I’m too highly strung to jump straight in the deep end of a lazy, indulgent Summer. I need to get some working energy out of my system before I can really let off steam, overeat and get my festive sparkle on.

So after all that, here’s one corner of the explosive mess I made while packing a few hours before my flight (the rest is too embarrassingly haphazard to document). I’ve just landed in LA for work for the next couple of days before Alex and I head to NY for a little more work, followed by ice cold down time until 2015 rolls around.
