Fall 2013 New York Fashion Week: Marchesa

Showing a romantically theatrical collection – Oscar worthy indeed – Marchesa’s Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig looked to Goya’s Portrait of Maria Teresa De Vallabriga on Horseback for inspiration this season.

Marchesa are of course one of the go-to houses for red carpet season; their sublime offering for autumn/winter 13 entirely covetable for the spate of prestigious events currently taking place. While 17th century references included a sumptuous colour palette and intricate embroideries, fresh appeal was added with sheer shirts seen over deconstructed corsetry and trousers worn under precisely pleated and folded strapless gowns.

Drama was a focal point of the show, held this time at the equally grand New York Public Library. Blood red was used as an accent while clever asymmetric gathers and ruching accentuated natural feminine curves. Bold off-the-shoulder gowns with fishtail skirts danced along the runway, set off by glimmering jewel embellishments. Elsewhere, romance was found in ethereal gowns with water-like frills, sheer overlays and beautiful tonal appliques.

The collection as a whole evoked a feeling of aged aristocracy, with luxurious fabrics and finishes at the very heart of proceedings. The ultimate showstopper was undoubtedly a cerise pink full-skirted gown with an almost origami-like sweetheart neckline, seen with just a flash of embroidery underneath.
