Fall 2013 London Fashion Week: Unique

London’s creative heritage and fashion credentials set the tone for Topshop Unique’s autumn/winter 13 collection. Not only was the show space set in the Tate Modern this season, but also, homage was paid to the famed Brit-pop era, with just a little beatnik undertone. Carnaby Street stalwarts and the city’s musos alike should revel in Emma Farrow’s latest offering.

The collection began dark and brooding, modish swing coats or outsize bomber jackets worn over mid-length skirts – layering was key, creating an edgy, arty vibe. Texture played a heavy party in depicting decoration this time around; patent leather used on outerwear and fuller skirts added intrigue, setting the tone for things to come.

As the collection progressed, shapes and texture softened. Sleek lines and grungy basics made way for power blue, sketchy oversized florals and fuzzy knitwear. Proportion was crucial to the range, achieving was Topshop does best – setting trends. Prim cravats were mixed with roomy jumpers, while cropped knits were teamed with circle skirts and fur tunics paired with baggy cropped trousers. Outwear was slung around shoulders for an effortless, indie feel while chunky footwear, either in ankle boots or strappy flats, kept the theme feeling young and a little rebellious.

Neutral tones were interspersed among the autumnal and powdery palette; blush pink seen in blocks with an iridescent sparkle applied to a thick-pile velvet. Glamour also played a part for the Unique girl this season, with fur wraps and all-over metallic finishes. The show stopper was saved until last, with Jourdan Dunn emerging in a bronze sequin, spaghetti strapped jumpsuit – cementing Unique’s take on grown-up grunge glam.
