Project Declutter: Basement shelves

Day 6 of Decluttering

Welcome back! Today I tackled the shelving by the basement door. This was piled high with miscellaneous items which needed better organization. I also wanted to create some open space so that I could add to it as I decluttered the rest of the house and wanted to move something less used into the basement. Here is want it looked like before I got started:

1) Set the timer. Go!

I throw some things away, broke down empty boxes, and consolidated space. It really didn’t take me long. (I couldn’t go through my husband’s black bins without him.)

2) Write it down

In the cabinets I’ve been storing some Christmas and kitchen stuff. I decided that I would wait until after this Christmas season – if I didn’t use the Christmas tins for cookies or gifts, then I would get rid of them:

If I didn’t use the Pampered chef to use Christmas cookies this year, I would get rid of it. If I didn’t use the tablecloth, small crock-pot, or chargers by January, then I would get rid of them:

I also wrote down a project I need to work on: scanning in pictures from my high school days. This is the pile of pictures I have! I really need to just get to it at some point:

This decluttering took me less than 30 minutes!! Wahoo!! More time to tackle other projects or to-do items! Here is the result. See, I do have some empty space to add to:

And if I scan all the pictures in and get rid of some things over Christmas I’ll have even more space! I really do want to buy more storage bins at some point. It just costs money. Right now I’m just using boxes. For example on the middle shelf by the pictures I have a box for light bulbs and on the top shelf those two big boxes have mason jars in the them. Ah, well, cute organization will come in time. The key right now is just to declutter and get organized.

Tomorrow I’ll be tackling the coat closet!! (I’m going to save a final declutter/organized session for the basement after I’ve done the rest of the house.)
