Project Declutter: Bookcases

Day 14: Bookcases

Today my goal was to just get rid of as many books as possible. We have 4 long bookcases and 1 half bookcase. That’s a LOT of books!! The first bookcase I had gone through in May, but I still found some books I wanted to get rid of. I was strict and asked these questions of every book I went through:

  1. Will I read this again?
  2. Is this a classic I want my kids to read someday?
  3. Will I ever loan this book out to someone else to read? (Which is something I rarely do – but this is a way of determining if it is a good resource book to keep, even if I don’t read again.)

I was very happy will the results of the first bookcase I went through. I went through the top three shelves. The bottom two shelves (one shelf not pictured) are full of my husband’s favorite book series:

Next, I took a look at the (future) kids bookcase. I didn’t take much out here. The top shelf is empty, that’s why it’s not in the picture, and the middle shelf is full of cruise souvenirs – I’m going to talk to my husband about relocating them:

The third bookcase I went through, I couldn’t really declutter too much, without talking with my husband (most of the DVDs and CDs are his, and this is his bookcase). Hopefully sometime in the future we can go through this bookcase. The small bookcase on the right has my sewing machine, fabrics, sewing supplies, etc. I’ve recently organized that section:

And then, I went through all my teaching curriculum and workbooks. Since I won’t be a classroom teacher again (unless I renew my license and go through classes), I got rid of a lot of my textbooks – I only kept the books I think would help in homeschooling my kids. Here is what I’m getting rid of:

The last bookcase is in our living room. It’s the religion resource section. I didn’t get rid of many books here:

The living room is our baby proof room, and this is how we discourage Ain from messing with the books:

For now, this is our solution. Maybe, as the decluttering process continues, we can find another home for the bookcase. Well, I’ll see you tomorrow! I’m going to start decluttering the kitchen!
