Sir John Barbirolli Conducts the Boston SymphonySibelius Symphony No. 2

JEAN SIBELIUS Symphony No. 2 in D, Op. 43 Boston Symphony Orchestra SIR JOHN BARBIROLLI Recorded Symphony Hall, Boston, MA on 30 October 1964
More from the great 1964 season. This performance has bopped around the internet for a while but this is quite the best-sounding source material I have come across. If they could get sound this good in 1964 why couldn't they get sound that was at least as good in the 70s and 80s?
Ignoring the Gnome's advice I will say that this performance by Sir John and the BSO makes my short list of the greatest performances I have heard of any piece of music by any artist. Period. Yes, it's that good. If you have not had the pleasure of hearing this performance yet then by all means give it a listen. Forget it is Barbirolli - his reputation as a Sibelius interpreter may cloud your objectivity - forget it is the BSO and just listen. Perhaps one or two of you will agree with me. The Gnome likes it too, though he admits it only grudgingly.
