{things i did} metropolitan vanities: the history of the dressing table

One thing I love about the Met is that it's big and varied enough to almost always have not just one but many interesting exhibitions going on at once. So while I visited to see other major shows, I was able to catch this small one about vanities. I love the fact that it not only pulled from the museum's own collections but from different departments because in the end it showed that across centuries and from America to Europe, Africa to Asia and just about every place in between, humans have always had a similar desire to set aside a space in their lives for personal adornment. Included in the show was everything from an Art Deco table to fancy French jewelry boxes to Medieval ivory combs to ancient Greek perfume bottles. But my absolute favorite piece? As a winged-eyeliner lover, it would have to be a tiny–now empty–Egyptian kohl bottle.
