SMS Arquitectos: Town house

{image 15} Town house by SMS ArquitectosSMS Arquitectos is a Spanish architecture practice established in 2007. Their last project is a refurbishment of a family house in the southern Majorcan town. Surrounded by fig and pomegranate trees, it is located on the edge of a village where crafts are still alive. Carried out for generations, these crafts are mixed with contemporary techniques are applied in the Town House project. Wood, „mallorqui cement”, sandstone and concrete blocks were the materials available to perform the work. Negotiating between available and desired, the architects had to plan and improvise at the very same time. „Rather than overall refurbishment, the work to be done could be considered as upgrading,” say the architects. „Every situation is evaluated to determine if there is a real need for carrying it out. If unavoidable, different strategies are explored to minimise their aggression in the original building”. Respectful of its original look, the architects from SMS actually implemented some small contemporary solutions. The outcome is a classic yet modern family house in a stunning surrounding.
