Mats Fahlander: Summer House

Summer House by Mats Fahlander This pavilion-like building is a summer house located in northern Sweden, built by Mats Fahlander Architects. Located between two fjords and surrounded by a national park, it serves a family that has been visiting these places for many generations. The central space of the house is the room for socialising, cooking and eating. It has large sliding windows that provide an impressive view of the Ocean. An extra bedroom and a sauna are located in a nearby guesthouse. As the weather conditions in the fjords may sometimes be rough, the contrast between the harsh climate and the easy summer life was a major factor considered by the designers. The appearance of the house corresponds with its surroundings. The timber construction is covered with a mineral facade in the same shade of grey as the rocks. Parts of the house are painted white, in line with the tradition of the west coast, whereas the rounded roofs derive their shape from the weathered rocks nearby.
