A morning at Hengrove Park

Last week, we were blessed with a couple of days without rain, so my neighbour and friend Emma and I thought, we should make the most of it and take the kids over to Hengrove Park, a park just around the corner from us.

There are parks closer to us, but Hengrove Park has got everything you could ask for, if you want to keep your kids entertained for a couple of hours. It’s situated behind the newly built Hengrove Leisure Complex and on site of the former Whitchurch Airfield, just 4 miles outside of Bristol’s busy city centre (map here).

On over 4 acres, kids of all ages can climb, slide and explore in three distinct play areas set out for different age groups, all of them very well looked after and designed. There’s a wooden fortress, colourful pirate ships and play houses for the little ones as well as a 12 metre high dome that invites older children to climb like monkeys and gives me a minor panic attack. Kids seem to love it though!

Most of the play park at Hengrove Park is covered in sand, but there are also areas for waterplay, so make sure to bring a bucket and spade for some sandcastle building and maybe a change of clothes, in case your little one gets a little too excited when splashing about.

On site, you can also find a cafe with in and outdoor seating that sells snacks, drinks sandwiches at very reasonable prices – handy, if you are staying all day or over the lunch hours. In the same building, there are also toilets with baby changing facilities.

A favourite of Amy’s little friend however is the skate park. He’s a big boy, you know! Equipped with half pipes, ramps, bowls, boxes and rails, it is perfect for those who love spending time on their BMX bikes, scooters or skateboards as there are obstacles for all skills levels.

All in all Hengrove Park is the perfect place for all the family as it caters for all age groups. Little ones will have just as much fun as older kids and teens and if you want a day out that all the family will enjoy, then Hengrove Park is the place to go. It’s free as is the parking (and there is plenty of it) it’s open from 10am to 7pm from April to the end of September during the week or from 10am to 6pm on weekends and bank holidays. During the winter months, the park closes at dawn.
