Teal Green Kelly Skirt

I've started with this photo because it's literally the only photo we got of Freckles while she was stationary. As you can see there's something really interesting looking over there.

So I made a Kelly Skirt! I was one of those people who didn't like this pattern when it came out and then I saw version after version after version after version of amazing easy to wear skirts and it wore me down. No, not really. It just took me a while to realise how versatile this pattern is.

So I decided to make my first version from this Teal Drill I had in my stash. I looked back and realised I had it marked for another project but I'm glad it got turned into this instead.

I've paired it with my Black & White Striped Peplum Top here. Another reason I'm still in love with peplum tops. You can wear them with high-waisted skirts and suddenly it's like a whole new top.

This skirt was really easy to make throughout. I'd never done a placket before but it was so simple. I'd also never made a buttonhole before (shame!) but I wanted to make this skirt so much I finally sat down and watched a tutorial on how to use my buttonhole foot and voila I've got me a button down skirt. The buttonholes aren't all amazing (I'm looking at you waistband) but they're good enough for a first try and I'm OK with that.

I chose to make covered buttons mostly because choosing any other colour would have been hard. Plus I like the way these look. We recently had a Japanese store open near where I work called Daiso that's kind of like a $2 store - except everything is $2.80. They have a ton of craft stuff in there and amongst it all I found a kit for making 18 covered buttons for - you guessed it - $2.80. They were quite fun to make too.

I was planning out this skirt when I saw Lauren's Corduroy Kelly Skirt where she mentioned leaving off the second button on the waistband if you wanted to wear a belt with it. I thought this idea was genius since I love wearing belts over skirts and dresses for no practical reason at all. So I skipped this button and instead sewed on a hook and eye. So glad I did.

I also used some black and white geometric quilting cotton I had in my stash for the pockets - which you can't really see.

Except in this photo I took before I sewed it in. But I know it's there, so that's cool.

And there you have it. My first Kelly Skirt. I'm sure I'll make others but I've got such an awesome line up of fabrics and patterns I can't do duplicates yet!
