Cran-Pumpkin Peanut Butter Oatmeal Homemade Dog Treats

This blog has gone to the dogs today!!! We started the day off with a great post on PetBox where we get to help rescue animals and you get to enter into a great giveaway for your furry friend! Now we have a fresh new recipe created in the kitchen of Pops and Basil…Cran-Pumpkin Peanut butter Oatmeal Homemade Dog Treats. WOW that’s a mouth full and it is a mouthful of flavor your doggie is going to LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!

Have I ever told you that my Pops and Basil are the fussiest little dogs in the entire world? Well they are! So baking for them is let’s say a bit of a challenge. If they don’t like what I bake I don’t take it personally any more because my band of doggy friends always seem to go head over tail for them…but this time…we have a WINNER…really! They both loved them…I was in shock…both of them!!! We put Basil in front of the treats to take a picture of him and he started eating them right away…we were like WHAT???? Then Pops joined in…just letting you know because if you happen to have little fuss budgets like us…this just might be the treat for your furry little family member.

Pops is once again guarding : ) How adorable is that little white frosting he is sporting! How I love a senior pup!

Basil decided that those treats needed to be eaten NOW! Basil is Pop’s son…but they are only 1 year apart…Basil is 11 years young!

So while Basil chewed away like crazy…Pops stole the other cookie and headed to a different spot!

These Homemade Dog Treats are EASY…oh so EASY to make! Don’t they look so pretty in little heart shapes with a crimson cranberry topping!

If you have a larger doggy…break out the bigger cookie cutters

No matter what the shape…your doggies are going to love them! I thought hearts were perfect…Valentine’s Day is on the way and it is National Heart Month!

So…Pops and Basil say we should share the recipe so all of their friends can have something yummy too…be prepared for an easy little baking project!

Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups of whole wheat flour
1 1/2 cups of Oatmeal flour (simply place 1 1/2 cups of regular oatmeal in the food processor and grind till fine : )
1/2 – 1 cup of dried cranberries
1 cup of pure packed pumpkin…NOT pumpkin pie in a can…pure pumpkin
2 large eggs
1/2 cup peanut butter of your choice…smooth…chunky…natural…
1/2 – 1 cup of dried cranberries…check out the wonderful health benefits from cranberries…there are many! DO NOT USE RAISINS instead…they are on the DOG POISON LIST!!!
1 tablespoon of organic brown sugar (optional) it just adds a little touch of sweetness and distributed over 100 small treats…it does not present a problem : ) but it can be left out.

Directions:
Use a standing mixer…crack your two eggs into the mixing bowl and beat for about 1 minute…then add the packed pumpkin…mix for a minute and then add your peanut butter and beat till everything is nice and creamy. Now slowly add your flours and the dried cranberries until you get a nice thick…not too sticky…not too dry dough…one that is perfect for rolling. If the dough is a bit sticky…just add a touch more flour and if it is too dry…a little bit more peanut butter or a little bit of milk. Flour your work area and take the dough out of the bowl and put it on the floured surface…cut in half…and roll the dough to approximately 1/4″ thickness and then cut away with your favorite cookie cutter! Gather the scraps and roll them out and start cutting out shapes till all the dough is used. Line 2 cookie trays with parchment paper and load them up with the treats. You can place close together since they do not rise. Bake in a 350 oven for 30 minutes…depending on your oven a few minutes more or less. We made them crunchy and it took exactly 33 minutes. Let cool and then let the pups at them…you will be getting tons of kisses with this homemade batch of doggy baked goodness! They will last in a well sealed container for about 10 days. If you know you are not going to use them…pack them up in freezer bags and place them in the freezer and just take them out as needed…they will last for 6 months in the freezer : )

Oh…here’s a fun little project that you can do if you want to make a little doggie cookie jar for you or a family member or friend! Just find yourself a plastic little doggie (I was lucky enough to find a dachshund) and a Mason Jar …paint it your doggie your favorite color…let it dry…coat it with a thin white glue and dip the whole thing into glitter. Let it dry and then blow dry the excess glitter off. Now get your favorite color spray paint or acrylic brush on paint and paint the lid of a mason jar…it will probably need two coats…then attach the little sparkling doggie to the flat top with a strong glue…fill up the jar…screw on the fancy doggie top and add a bow…a tag…or anything you would like…it makes such a cute little accessory and it is just soooooooooooooooooooo easy!

It’s just that easy!

So…ready to bake up these yummy homemade dog treats for your favorite pups!!! There are going to be some tails waggin for sure!

Oh yes…Pops doesn’t want you to miss out on his name sake treat which is fabulous…Pops Pizza Dog Treats.

Then drop by this mornings post and enter in the PetBox GIVEAWAY and give rescue a helping PAW

Sending tons of Pops and Basil Hugs and Kisses!!!
