The Friday Five | Five Fonts I’m Currently Loving

I like to pretend I’m a designer, but really I should leave it to the professionals,
which is why Jess from From Rain to Shine is here sharing her top 5 fonts while I’m off at school.

Hi, I’m Jess, and I’m so excited to share five of my favorite fonts with you on Squirrelly Minds. Originally from Seattle, I moved to California for college and never left. I am a graphic designer blogger who loves typography, color and a good gluten free cupcake. You can find me blogging at From Rain to Shine about all things design, Seattle/Los Angeles lifestyle. As a designer, I am always on the hunt for new, well designed fonts, be it ones I purchase or find for free. Here is a round up of five (Free!) fonts I have been loving lately. Font #1: Silverfake

Semi-serif, semi-thick, I love this slab typeface. I have seen Silverfake popping up all over the blogosphere, as well as some printed material for some time. This font is great for a header, or any large sized text. Slab fonts are not ideal for text, copy or any small point size due to their decorative and thick nature.

Font #2: Tryst

Finding a good (free) serif font is like striking gold. I recently found Tryst and L-O-V-E it. It is a traditional serif, yet has some playful hints. Serifs are great for headlines and body copy.

Font #3: Blanch

Has anyone else caught on to the massive pineapple trend going on right now? I have been seeing it everywhere, from designs, stationery, clothing to blogs. For whatever reason, this fruit is in the limelight! Blanch is an awesome sans serif decorative font that comes in SIX different styles. For a free font, that is fantastic! With both thick and thin, outline and filled in styles, Blanch is ideal for large headlines and posters, however, I would refrain from using it for small type.

Font #4: Quicksand

I find myself going through phases with sans serif fonts. I will like one for several months, use it on EVERYTHING and then grow tired of it. However, that has yet to happen with Quicksand. This versatile font comes in seven styles, including a dashed line version. There are SO many possibilities. I use this font primarily for larger sized text, but it can work well small as well.

Font #5: Altast

What would a font round up be without a script font. I find Altast to be the perfect combination of elegance and playfulness, a font that can be dressed up for dressed down. I love the loops and thick and thins that make up this beautiful script. Perfect for stationery you make at home, or for a little note to a special friend.
